My politically incorrect straight talk... I am SO TIRED of "undecideds" ...
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 10:27 PM by krkaufman
... getting disproportionate attention in the post-debate coverage. Personally, I'm not sure the views of these "low-info" voters really warrant the magnification that the MSM gives them.

If you haven't been able to identify sufficient differentiating positions and characteristics between these candidates by now then I have to question the basis of your decision-making.

edit: p.s. I *LOVE* 'The Daily Show'!! From tonight's show, John Oliver breaks down and critiques the "Undecided" vote. The video is a must-see, with Oliver further breaking-down the "Stupid" vote. (Note: Humorless Cub fans might want to skip the video.)

edit: p.s. Thread title altered from original to focus on true object of my scorn, "undecideds." "Independents" were haphazardly lumped-in in the OP, without cause. (orig title: 'My politically incorrect straight talk... I am SO TIRED of "Independents" & "undecideds" ...')

14. I should have been more precise.
Independents who have decided aren't the same as "undecideds."

6. I know. It's like, "Hi! I don't pay attention. Ask me what I think."
Sort of like discounting a jury member if they read the paper.

7. I'm SOOOO with you! Independents are people who vote on dumb crap like "have a beer with".
I canvass in my community frequently and independent voters are the worst doors to knock on. I actually prefer Republicans to them. The non-affiliated voters come up with the most random crap to justify their positions.

11. There really are some people
who are still on the fence..I know quite a few....these are people who don't really pay attention to politics but want to vote. We should encourage them to become more knowledgeable about issues so the next time hopefully they are more informed.

12. In a word - selfishness. Let me explain.
I have a co-worker like this at work. He's still undecided because, in his own words, "No one caters to me."

O RLY you selfish fuck?

Anyway, EOR (end of rant).

15. I have these at my workplace and I think
they are waiting to see who looks like they are winning and then they'll jump on the winning side. They are totally uninformed and oblivious and don't really care who wins, but they want to be able to say they were right.

Get free cookies, have Soledad O Brien begging to know my opinion, be on national TV - hell yeah I'd act undecided. Until the last debate when I'd give powerful, insightful analysis and ride off into the sunset with that little bundle of journalistic hotness.

Or something.

uhuh... i don't know... i mean where do they really stand on the issues?... uhh no one is specific enough..

The election is in 3 weeks. Where have they been for 2 years?

Stupid, dopey, lazy and mentally self indulgent. Both candidates have websites and position papers. Grow up.

20. Totally agree
Last debate, on CNN, the undecideds were interviewed and quite a few had definite opinions about one or the other candidate and some raised their hands when asked if they had made a decision who to vote for. I think these last few just are too stupid to understand what the candidates are saying; they won't make their choice until election day and then just close their eyes and vote whichever name their index finger falls on.

23. I'd like to respectfully offer a different perspective.
Edited on Wed Oct-08-08 07:52 AM by magdalena
I'm half Asian and my mother is a fairly recent naturalized citizen. This is the 2nd presidential election she will be voting in. Much of the Asian community around here are newbie voters. Most of them come from places where there were no democratic elections and they take the right to vote very seriously and want to do it responsibly. Some of them feel overwhelmed by the complexity of our electoral process. They do not fully understand the difference between the republican and democratic parties or what either of them stand for. Some are not entirely fluent in English and are unable to fully understand the media, the debates, even the advertisements. Many of my mother's friends are legitimately undecided and I don't blame them. Although, I have been educating them as to why the democratic party is probably in their best interest. My mom is voting blue!

I'm sure there are a lot of people in this or a similar situation, but I'm not sure how much of the undecideds they represent. I'm certainly not apologizing for people who are fully capable, but just too lazy to make up their minds. Just want to let people know there are some undecideds that are quite justified in being so.

24. For people in that situation,
the ones who don't understand the issues, the candidates, the ads or the media.

For the ones who don't understand much of anything about the election, the truly responsible decision may be to not vote.

25. My point is they are trying...
It may just take them longer until they are comfortable with a decision. How much of America truly understands everything about the elections, issues, and candidates? The people I am speaking of are undoubtedly more informed than someone who is certain he doesn't want to vote for a black guy, or someone who is certain they do want to vote for the candidate with the nice ass.

27. Yes, that is very understandable ...
... but doesn't reflect the "undecideds" we're subjected to on TV.

I'd almost prefer someone like your mom being on TV, since she's more of a blank slate than a broken slate (which the current pool seems to be).

26. I agree. I have NEVER been in that position at this point
in an election cycle. I am often undecided at the beginning of a primary, and that may last even for a few months but by the time I have voted in the primary (it's a given, of course, that I will NOT vote Republican), I have decided who I want in the general election.
If my candidate does not win the primary (this year he did), then I have to change my mind, but that takes me all of 10 seconds.

What's with being so undecided? I'd hate to go out to dinner with these people.
