Kathleen Parker: Palin and her supporters know the code

October 7, 2008

When Sarah Palin said she was taking off the gloves, she wasn't just whistling ''Onward, Christian Soldiers.'' Or was she?
<snip>
In Colorado a few days ago, she told fans that Obama pals around with terrorists. Later in Clearwater, Fla., resplendent in white against a backdrop of red, white and blue, she said, ''This is not a man who sees America the way that you and I see America, as the greatest source for good in this world. I'm afraid this is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to work with a former domestic terrorist who had targeted his own country.''

''Booooooooooooo.''

On Monday, Bill Kristol wrote in his column that Palin thinks Obama's association with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright needs to be discussed more. Because hardly anyone ever mentioned it?

Palin also took the opportunity in Clearwater to deflect criticism of her interview with Katie Couric. First she joked that she was only working for Tina Fey's job security. Then she said the reason she did so poorly in the interview was that she was annoyed.

We are to infer that the reason Palin gave answers that ranged from ridiculous to nonsensical was that she was merely withholding her insights to demonstrate her pique? Right.

Nevertheless, ''Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!''

The real Sarah Palin is free at last. She's not just a hockey mom after all. She's Palin the Impaler. Pit bulls beware.
<sbip>
Democrats and other critics distracted by her winks may have missed the message, but Palin's target audience heard it loud and clear. She is like the high-pitched whistle only dogs can hear. While Democrats heard non-answers, superfluous segues and cartoon words -- shout-out, I'll betcha, doggone, extra credit -- Republicans heard God, patriotism, courage, victory.

It's called code, and Republicans are fluent.
<snip>

read the whole article. Parker knocks it out of the, well, park.

23. I think word has come down from her big bosses . . .
. . . to take down McCain. And like a good corporate-conservative soldier, she's doing it. Not that I mind!

4. What's happening? Is Parker having some kind of slow-motion epiphany?
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 05:47 PM by Jackpine Radical
First it was Palin Unready for Prime Time, and now it's Palin the Dog Whistler and slappin' Krostol around.

Jeez, at this rate she's gonna be a Democrat by January.

5. To know Paliban, one only needs look at her supporters; "Kill him!"
Calling for the murder of anyone, let alone a fellow American citizen, a US Senator...

That, to me, says all anyone needs to know about the paliban.

6. oh my god, it's a freaky world when I'm agreeing with Kathleen parker.
And she said that Palin sounded like a "wind up doll" at the debate, on the Chris Matthews show.

8. right. she's appealing to her base. that's all they have right now.
It's easy enough for everyone else to recognize and reject.

If they lose these rabid base republicans they're through. That's not our problem, it's theirs.

Our task is to keep from letting their patter draw our attention away from Obama's successful economic appeal. That's why Keating was used as a foil against the Ayers stuff.

16. So will mine.
But I doubt she'll be too harsh. Between That Column Everyone Quoted and this latest one, was this:

http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/main.asp?SectionID=12&SubSectionID=101&ArticleID=51144&TM=69398.09

which isn't exactly glowing in its praise of Sarah, but it's a lot kinder than what she'd written before.

13. It's weird to agree with her but I hope her folks take a listen to
what she's saying. Very True and they do need to call her off. She's going to end up making a bad situation worse.

17. She'd written a really, really harsh piece
http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/main.asp?SectionID=12&SubSectionID=101&ArticleID=50803&TM=69398.09

that famously opined:

When Couric pointed to polls showing that the financial crisis had boosted Obama's numbers, Palin blustered wordily: "I'm not looking at poll numbers. What I think Americans at the end of the day are going to be able to go back and look at track records and see who's more apt to be talking about solutions and wishing for and hoping for solutions for some opportunity to change, and who's actually done it?"

If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself.

19. She knows how they think , for sure.
Could it be she's coming over from the dark side? I'm not exactly going to be waiting with open arms. My local fishwrap carried her column for a few years and she ruined an awful lot of otherwise delicious cups of coffee with her biliousness.

21. This is the quote I've been hoping to find again!
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 06:27 PM by Juniperx
"This is not a man who sees America the way that you and I see America, as the greatest source for good in this world. I'm afraid this is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to work with a former domestic terrorist who had targeted his own country."

Palin needs smacked-down with this:

It seems to me that Sarah Palin is not a woman who sees America the way that you and I see America, as the greatest source for good in this world. I'm afraid this is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to work with a group that wants to take Alaska's star off Old Glory. A group fighting to have Alaska secede from the union!

22. A woman whose group had a deal with our mortal enemy IRAN to go AGAINST America
How is that for the truth about foreign terrorists working alongside that evil woman and her family of domestic terrorists?

24. "extra credit" is an interesting code phrase
In this case it's a quid pro quo, watch your teacher's boss on TV and be rewarded with having to learn less (like a Civics lesson from Duhbya, "it's your money! you paid for it!"), but even in its purest form "extra credit" always seemed like an end run around the core curriculum, either a way to inflate grades (since the 0-100% basis of records/transcripts can't reflect 0-120% unless nominal 100% scores are scaled down to 83.33, rendering extra credit "additional questions on the test" not "bonus stuff that can only make your grade go up") or at worst a way for the teacher to politicize learning by handing out passes for doing non-academic stuff involving television (in my benighted section of NJ, watching "Wheel of Fortune" was one such criteria in a "Language Arts" class)
