Lieberman: "If John McCain had a campaign event at the home of somebody who bombed buildings..."
Lieberman: McCain draws the line at using Rev. Wright
David Edwards and Andrew McLemore
Published: Sunday October 5, 2008

Character attacks in the presidential race were the subject of debate on Fox News Sunday morning with host Chris Wallace.

Senators Joe Lieberman and Claire McCaskill wrangled over the McCain campaign's shift toward attack ads that criticize Sen. Barack Obama for his alleged ties to radicals.

Wallace asked Lieberman if McCain would bring up Rev. Jeremiah Wright after condemning state Republican parties for running ads criticizing Obama for his relationship with the controversial figure.

Lieberman responded: "He didn't like that approach. Senator McCain feels that same way about bringing up Reverend Wright through his campaign. And that's the kind of line drawing that I think John McCain is all about."

Later on Fox News Sunday, Brit Hume said the McCain camp would be "out of their mind" to not bring up Obama's relationship with Rev. Wright.

"What on earth are Joe Lieberman and John McCain talking about when they say that the long association with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright is off the table?" Hume said. "Why is that off the table? It's an important part of Obama's background and record. It's one of the reasons people wonder about who he really is."

McCaskill argued with Lieberman that the McCain campaign has no moral quandaries against unmerited attacks on Obama, citing vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's recent comments tying Obama with his terrorist pals.

"John McCain can pick up the phone today and call Sarah Palin and say 'don't say things like that, there's no place for that in this campaign, the American people don't want that'," McCaskill said.

The Missouri senator further chided McCain's "erratic behavior" on the economy, citing his reversals on a campaign suspension to help pass the Wall Street bailout and nearly foregoing the first presidential debate.

Lieberman said earlier that the McCain campaign is focusing on the future and not character attacks, though he also said that it was "fair game" to link Obama with Tony Rezko and Bill Ayers.

But Wallace corrected Lieberman, bringing up a McCain aide that said the campaign was changing its focus from the economy to Obama's history.

Lieberman responded by referencing a New York Times article about Obama's past associations with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and arguing that neither campaign has avoided low blows to its opponent.

"If the shoe was on the other foot and John McCain had one of his earliest campaign events at the home of somebody who had formed a right-wing group that had bombed buildings,... you bet the Obama campaign would have been raising that question," Lieberman said.

4. I'm all for recycling
But as far as I know, if one continually recycles shit, it remains shit. And that's what this is all about. The Rev. Wright thing died a few months ago, and the Ayers thing also died several months ago. And I belive Obama was about seven or eight years old when Ayers belonged to the "terrorist group". It's time to break out the Keating five and it's time to just absolutely destroy McCain and his surrogates, especially Lieberman.

11. Problem is that it's hard to break out Keating 5 when you parade around with John Glenn
I suggested that in another thread and then I saw a photo of Glenn stumping for Obama at a rally in Ohio. Now I'm not saying Obama should ditch Glenn, but there is definitely a trade off there.

5. You might say that McCain spent 5 years in prison for bombing innocents.
'Course it will be hard to get Americans to see that particular reality.

23. Yes, McCain himself used to bomb buildings
When he crashed near Hanoi the Vietnamese peasants almost beat him to death - he was saved by North Vietnamese troops.

24. That's what I was thinking
- Johnny boy participated in the violation of just war ethics and international law by bombing civilians.

He gets a pass because it was state sponsored terrorism of the Vietnamese by US.

8. Lieberman is as desperate as McCain. Without a McCain win, his career is in the toilet...

Republicans hate Lieberman almost as much as democrats. They're just using him for as long as he'll play ball.

He's lost any democratic base he had, and very few republicans will ever vote for him.

He knows that his only future is in a McCain cabinet.

What a shame it will be not to see him whine anymore, huh? :)

18. Well, Joe, now that you mention it . . .
As Media Matters for America has noted, Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in and the break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers. Liddy has acknowledged preparing to kill someone during the Ellsberg break-in "if necessary"; plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a "gangland figure" to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap "leftist guerillas" at the 1972 Republican National Convention -- a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis. (The murder, firebombing, and kidnapping plots were never carried out; the break-ins were.) During the 1990s, Liddy reportedly instructed his radio audience on multiple occasions on how to shoot Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents and also reportedly said he had named his shooting targets after Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Liddy has donated $5,000 to McCain's campaigns since 1998, including $1,000 in February 2008. In addition, McCain has appeared on Liddy's radio show during the presidential campaign, including as recently as May. An online video labeled "John McCain On The G. Gordon Liddy Show 11/8/07" includes a discussion between Liddy and McCain, whom Liddy described as an "old friend." During the segment, McCain praised Liddy's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great," said he was "proud" of Liddy, and said that "it's always a pleasure for me to come on your program."

Additionally, in 1998, Liddy reportedly held a fundraiser at his home for McCain. Liddy was reportedly scheduled to speak at another fundraiser for McCain in 2000. The Charlotte Observer reported on January 23, 2000, that McCain's campaign vouched for Liddy's "character"

27. If Obama was supported by a man CONVICTED of
trying to undermine the Presidential election, 1972, it would be all over the papers.

Not to mention the same supporter calling for the death of Federal agents.

The supporter of McCain is one G. Gordon Liddy convicted of burglarizing the Democratic National Headqquarters in the Watergate complex in 1972.
