Photo: My 6 year-old Obama fan just decorated his bedroom door.
He's been following this election with intense interest. He wears his Obama pin to school every day. Talks to all his friends about politics. Organized the neighborhood kids to chant: "Obama '08!" at all the passing cars. Last week he came to the Campaign for Change offices with me to make a poster to put on the walls there (we've got art from kids covering all the walls), and he grabbed some posters and stickers. Here's the result.

He says he's going to be president himself one day. I can't wait.

12. Thanks! He's been blowing my mind lately.
He's OBSESSED with American history - specifically the Revolutionary War and the formation of the country. He's also completely captivated with presidential history. We can spend hours comparing the relative merits of different presidents. And he doesn't see everything in black and white. FDR was great, yes, but he did work on developing nuclear weapons, and he didn't get us involved in WW2 until after we had been attacked. Johnson did great things for civil rights and against poverty, but he was wrong about Vietnam. These are all things my SIX YEAR-OLD has been telling me. Blows my mind.

6. My 11 year old middle schooler
was told to take off her Obama button at her school. The next day her World Cultures teacher told the class that she was voting McCain. How is this right? We live in Texas.

9. I think we're lucky that my son's teacher is a big Obama supporter
Though she doesn't discuss that with the kids or during school. She and I had a conversation about it after school recently - she's been organizing house parties for the campaign. I love it!!

11. Did you complain to the principal and/or school superintendent?
I can see how a teacher might ask a child to take off a political button in the non-partisan public school atmosphere, but then to endorse McCain in front of the students is really an abuse of power. The school officials should know about this. You do, after all, live in Austin--if any Texas school system would be open to hearing about pro-Republican propaganda being spewed by teachers, it would be Austin.

14. Though my address is Austin
our school district is Round Rock - Williamson County. And yes I called the school and am waiting to hear back from the principal as I could not reach her Friday. I would like to hear just exactly what their policies are on this as I have not been able to find anything online through their websites. As election day draws near I'm hoping this will be discussed in a nonpartisan manner and that the Obama kids will not get too much flack from the McCain kids, as they - the "OK's" I now call 'em - are waaay outnumbered by the "McKids" in our neighborhood.

17. I wondered about the Austin thing after I posted.
I live in Denver now, but I lived just outside Denver for a while. During that time I kept Denver in my DU profile--wth, I was living in the metro area. And I'm not surprised you haven't found information on the school's web site. I've found most school web sites to be very, very shallow (probably because whatever school administrator set it up has only learned the basics of HTML). And of course everyone in any M-F industry is almost impossible to get ahold of on a Friday afternoon. I do hope you hear back from the principal tomorrow.

:bounce: It's beautiful! :patriot:

My kid is about 4 months shy of being able to vote this year, but a lot of his friends are 18. I discuss the election with each and every one of them before they proceed beyond the foyer. I directly know about a dozen new voters among his friends and I have told them ALL to bring 5-10 friends with them to the polls.

8. My children worked with me in the McGovern campaign and one
thing for sure your little one will be involved when he's older. They never forget. They met Eleanor and loved her. However, they were also heartbroken when we lost. I think you little one is going to be a winner. Thank God.

18. Man this is great.
I've seen so many people, including myself, post things about what their kids are doing during this historic campaign and I can't come close to finding a historical parallel to what is happening now. My daughter, her first year in college helping to put together the first Young Democrats club and is phone banking and registering voters, I see a wonderful drawing a young fellow did from another person who posts here on DU, the kid with the idiot teacher at school we talked about a couple of weeks ago, and it goes on from here I'm sure. This is what Obama has done, and this is why he must win. The work the young people of America has done on his behalf points to the future, and real hope for all of us.

Your sons door is just wonderful and make sure he knows he's now an official Duer in my book. Thanks for the post, and for a reason to hope on a Sunday morning.

21. Maybe the Young Democrats need to lower their age requirement
It's still 14, as far as I know, but from some of the posts in these thread, they should consider dropping it down a little. Not so sure about 6 though. On the other hand, Obama himself DID say he would be President when he was in Kindergarten, didn't he?

31. BEST part where he wrote "Obama Biden" .......
...... I was a big supporter of Carter when *I* was six years old in 1980 (I was the only kid to vote for him in my classes' mock-election.) It didn't quite work out for me as well as I know it will work out for your son.

I love how he decorated his door! I've been talking to my two girls, 6 & 11 quite a bit about the election, etc., too, and they have consequently been taking a great deal of interest in the election. I gave them both Obama/Biden buttons. The six year old put hers on her book bag and has been showing it to friends, teachers, bus driver, etc. Fortunately no one has said anything mean to her, she's only had positive reactions. I'm going to make them both some stickers from http://logobama.com/ so they can decorate their bookcovers, lockers, etc.
