Analysis: Palin's words carry racial tinge

Analysis: Palin's words carry racial tinge

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 16 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is "palling around with terrorists" and doesn't see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.

<...>

"Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain's ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.

"This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America," she said. "We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism."

<...>

Whether intended or not by the McCain campaign, portraying Obama as "not like us" is another potential appeal to racism. It suggests that the Hawaiian-born Christian is, at heart, un-American.

<...>

John McCain occasionally looks back on decisions with regret. He has apologized for opposing a holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. He has apologized for refusing to call for the removal of a Confederate flag from South Carolina's Capitol.

1. NOOOO! *REALLY*????

It's always funny watching white folks refuse to say the word "racist", though.

10. A tinge:
She's just a little bit racist.

It's really funny how people, on both sides, have no problem harping on sexism, but mention race, and every one wants to run the other way.

Why should she be allowed to get away with this BS?

by independents. There are on to her. She has negative credibility. She blew it big time on that surge not working in Afghanistan bit on TV. People watching had read of that in the news earlier in the day.

Let her shout out all she wants. It helps our side.

So why bother when there is much worse stuff to use. She'll lose more votes in red states with her stupidity than we will ever take by inciting a race campaign.

She said it, she owns it, she gets called on it.

Why hide and try to avoid it, pretend she didn't say it?

not race. And most white people will agree with her. So why fucking bother. Especially when there is so much more to use against her, and very real racial stuff to use against the campaign, see below.

and that is McCain's campaign chair in Virginia. He can fire the guy, but the stink is still there. That will horrify people in the west who are not used to that kind of thing in any way shape or form.

23. Racism is racism. The comments are more severe, but as I said
Palin is his running mate. While her comment is more subtle, why shouldn't she be called on it?

McCain can fire the guy and say he doesn't tolerate that type of thing. Can he fire Palin or will he distance himself from her comments?

You are saying not to incite a racial election, yet if this is played up it would do just that.

Playing up the comments in VA would inject race into the election. There is no way to avoid it.

Both comments are unacceptable, and both should be rejected.

39. One is blatant, the other is vague
If you're going to talk about racism, it better be undeniable. The last thing we need is Joe Watkins to talk about all the differences in values that Sarah Palin was referring to, and we're off the topic of the war and economy, which is where we win. I don't know why anybody would want to do that.

Do they care that he's a black person "palling" around with terrorists?

Do you believe that if the charge was made against McCain (that is palling around with terrorists) it would have the same impact on people's psyche?

Frankly, I don't think Palin's attacks will work, but screw Palin and the other racist assholes who continue to use this smear. They should be called out. I don't give a damn who is made uncomfortable by it.

As a single professional white woman within a few years of her age, I do not have anything in common with this person at all. If she was trying to reach out and use "straight talk" to speak directly to the American people- well she doesn't see anyone without a family like hers as American either apparently. She wouldn't approve of the people I pal around with, or the religion I practice, or my lifestyle, or the issues I care about, or my views on womens issues and economic and social justice. There are millions of people she doesn't connect with at all.
