Folks, it looks as if MSNBC tilts right during the day and then shift left...
in the evening hours.

And you can see the ratings.

Morning Joe and MSNBC Live are the lowest rated ao all shows on the network.

Countdown, Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews are the top rated shows for MSNBC, all drawing at least twice what Joey draws.

1. Isn't that trend true across the cable news spectrum though?
That is, don't morning shows always score way lower than primetime?

2. I would expect evening news shows to draw a larger veiwing audience.
the pool is larger then no?

Not that msnbc doesn't tilt wildly right in the morning.

5. But if they stayed right at night, they would be crushed by fox..
So they picked correctly, choosing Kieth and RM to take the battle to fox...

10. God forbid that they just give all this idiocy amiss and just report the news.
Mind you, I love Keith and Rachel and I think they both do a great job. And besides, what I suggested in the title of this post is something of an impossibility in the 24-hour news cycle, so whattaya gonna do?

3. Of course...
Cause most people are working.

But the point is they are decidedly right in the AM and left of center in the PM.

6. Oh, I'll grant you that for the most part.
I'm just saying that the political slant isn't necessarily the primary contributor to lower morning ratings, if it's a contributor at all.

9. The show is god awful, I have to give you that.
But I don't think people want fox lite in the AM. That's why Morning Joe is tanking.

14. And yet, when I wake up in the mornings and get ready for work, what do I turn on? MSNBC.
What're my other options? The networks are incredibly banal. Fox and Friends is obviously intolerable. And CNN's American Morning is about as fluffy as the Today Show.

12. I started noticing that a week or two before Rachel's debut.
For a long time I had been only averagely annoyed by daytime MSNBC (i.e. no better or worse than CNN).. Then suddenly I found myself yelling back at the screen with increased regularity until now it is just about unwatchable.

4. I assume the OP is talking about relative numbers, not absolute ones;
e.g. Joe's rank against other shows in the same time slot on other channels, and Rachel et al compared to other shows on at the same time.

They wouldn't even be in the ball park if they had decided to go Fox Lite.

Q3 2008 Ratings: Rankers
Fox News Channel had eight of the top 10 programs in Total Viewers during the third quarter of 2008. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show made the top 10, in sixth place for the quarter, although there were only 14 programs. CNN's Larry King Live finished 10th. The O'Reilly Factor was the top program again last quarter.

Bill O'Reilly also had the top program in the A25-54 demo, and Hannity & Colmes was 2nd. HLN's Nancy Grace cracked the top 10 as well in the demo.

17. The problem with MSNBC
Edited on Thu Oct-02-08 10:19 AM by spokane
is they are not viewed by the whole of the United States, I've been to hotels where
they don't have MSNBC, the cable companies same with satellite networks, are either
playing footer with MSNBC or they don't have a very good marketing team.

Cable companies and satellite networks are not carrying MSNBC in some states or would
request higher fees to have access to MSNBC. Thats where me think something is does not
add up, either MSNBC needs to change their policies or create a cheaper tariff for folks
to be able to afford it. Fox is all over the place just as CNN, even though people don't
watch it, public places still have them on, I think thats how the count is done. You could
imagine how they get their high ratings.

MSNBC needs a better strategical team and an excellent marketing team.

Thats my observation....

19. So look at how well KO and RM are performing under those odds...
I think the Hotels get the stripped down version for cost cutting.

I think I have only been in one motel that had MSNBC on the tube.

21. Not in Canada either
And a friend of mine who lives in Toronto had never heard of MSNBC until I mentioned it to him a few months ago. In Canada, they get CNN, and I believe they get Fox.

24. We Do Get MSNBC
in Canada... and CNN, Faux, etc. With our cable in Toronto, and throughout the country, MSNBC is an add-on. Faux is free but I and many others, block it. Rachel(part Newfie!) and Keith are great and are very popular, here. CNN has really become Faux-lite.

18. Where Have You Been?
All anyone has to do is go to Media Matters.
1.MSNBC has ran the McCain negative ads more than any other network.
2.They gave the republicans more coverage during the Democratic Convention than they did the Democrats.
3.They cover Obama more but their coverage is over 70% NEGATIVE.
Your older voters the elderly and retired are more likely to watch the news during the day. They let Joe do a 3 hour republican talking points infomercial every morning. Now he even gets another hour at 2:00 in the afternoon. People need to STOP watching Joe period.
MSNBC letting Keith and Rachael carry the network because they make the most advertising revenue during their shows. Then carrying the right wing banner during the rest of their network hours is unjustifiable.
Now tell me why you watch Morning Joe?
