I love "Home to Houston"

When I pulled out of Basra they all wished me luck
Just like they always did before
With a bulletproof screen on the hood of my truck
And a Bradley on my back door
And I wound her up and shifted her down
And I offered this prayer to my lord
I said “God get me back home to Houston alive
and I won’t drive a truck anymore”

5. also check out the liner notes . . .
http://www.steveearle.net/discography/revolution.php

Liner Notes

The word "immediate" best describes the atmosphere around the studio as this record was being made in the late spring of 2004. The prisoner abuse scandal had just broken and the Bush administration, still reeling from the 9/11 commission hearings, was circling the wagons. The Democrats, for their part, were carefully (sometimes, in my opinion, too carefully) trying to sort out how best to press the advantage. Meanwhile, back here in Tennessee, me and my boys had a deadline to meet.

The most important presidential election of our lifetime was less than seven months away and we desperately wanted to weigh in, both as artists and as citizens of a democracy. All but two of these songs were recorded within 24 hours of the first line hitting the paper. We worked 12- and 14-hour days and in between takes and over meals we talked about the war, the election, baseball, and women, in precisely that order.

Maybe I am getting old.

Democracy is hard work. American democracy requires constant vigilance to survive and nothing short of total engagement to flourish. Voting is vital, but in times like these voting alone simply isn’t enough. By the time some of you hear these songs the election will be over. Then the real struggle begins.

When the dust clears and the votes are all counted (we’re watchin’ YOU, Jeb) it will be up to all of us- Democrats, Republicans, Greens, and independents alike-to hold whomever is left standing accountable for their actions on our behalf every single day that they are in power. The day after the election, regardless of the outcome, the war will go on, outsourcing of our jobs will continue, and over a third of our citizens will have no health care coverage whatsoever.

2. #1 country is huge
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 04:39 PM by goodhue
Everyone should go out and buy this disc if they have not already!

Rich Man's War Lyrics

Jimmy joined the army ‘cause he had no place to go
There ain’t nobody hirin’
‘round here since all the jobs went
down to Mexico
Reckoned that he’d learn himself a trade maybe see the world
Move to the city someday and marry a black haired girl
Somebody somewhere had another plan
Now he’s got a rifle in his hand
Rollin’ into Baghdad wonderin’ how he got this far
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

Bobby had an eagle and a flag tattooed on his arm
Red white and blue to the bone when he landed in Kandahar
Left behind a pretty young wife and a baby girl
A stack of overdue bills and went off to save the world
Been a year now and he’s still there
Chasin’ ghosts in the thin dry air
Meanwhile back at home the finance company took his car
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

When will we ever learn
When will we ever see
We stand up and take our turn
And keep tellin’ ourselves we’re free

Ali was the second son of a second son
Grew up in Gaza throwing bottles and rocks when the tanks would come
Ain’t nothin’ else to do around here just a game children play
Somethin’ ‘bout livin’ in fear all your life makes you hard that way

He answered when he got the call
Wrapped himself in death and praised Allah
A fat man in a new Mercedes drove him to the door
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

4. This part in that song chokes me up
Left behind a pretty young wife and a baby girl
A stack of overdue bills and went off to save the world
Been a year now and he’s still there
Chasin’ ghosts in the thin dry air
Meanwhile back at home the finance company took his car
Just another poor boy off to fight a rich man’s war

Wonder how many poor kids' cars have been repo'd and marriages have gone sour, etc. The ones lucky enough to get home are screwed in many ways too.

12. It's actually #12 which is pretty excellent for Steve Earle debut.
Let's see how high we can get it for next week.
Go buy it and get others to buy it now!

Here is Steve Earle's chart history for reference:
http://www.steveearle.net/charts.php

Other top 20 Country albums highest positions. . .
Jerusalem (2002) made it to #7
Transcendetal Blues (2000) #5
The Mountain (1999) #19
Copperhead Road (1988) #7
Exit O (1987) #15
Guitar Town (1986) #1

I can't belive I Feel Alright (1996) didn't chart top 20.
It's still one of my favorites.

6. Thanks for the heads up -- I love Steve!
He's the musical equivalent of Michael Moore, he's brave and loud and will not STFU just because he's told to.

His new album is brilliant of course, and he is a musician who truly stands up and fights for what he believes in.

He is THE Man.

(I love my husband, but if Steve called...)

10. De nada. I love Steve too. And I love you and your husband and Skinner
and ZenLefty and Keph, and Lynnsin and Volcanojen and Matcom and Walt and Will and Zombywoof and Nothingshocksme more and every other baddass who knows what time it is.

On edit: Don't know if you know but there is a damn good documenary called American Boy (or something) about Steve (on DVD, I think) Nora Guthrie is in it. And it was shot in the last 2 years. Covers his appearance on O'Reilly just after he wrote American Taliban song.

7. Steve Earle is number 1 on the Country charts???
Is this so? If so, then WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

:kick:

And it's nice to see that "Afterhours" will have a REAL AMERICAN like Earle on as opposed to those who want to hurt America such as Ron Silver and Larry Gatlin!

15. Thanks!
Everyone should hear this CD...

I even signed up on the website to help promote it, and they quickly sent me a pile of postcards and posters that I'm handing out and leaving in coffee shops, etc.

Saw Steve in Santa Barbara this summer (Gram Parsons tribute)...he is the best.

16. Steve Earle is fantastic and Johnnny cash was a big fan of his
I heard him talking on DemocracyNow! the other day. My first Steve Earle CD was "Just an American Boy", a double live CD containing much of his best work including "Jerusalem", "John Walker's Blues" "Conspiracy Theory" and "Amerika 6.0" It also contains a lot of his personal commentary on the death penalty, labor unions and the Bush Administration's government by fear. Right before "Christmas in Washington" he tells us that he almost moved to Vermont just so he could vote for Pat Leahy. I highly recommend buying and sharing this CD with your friends.

17. His new album is killer?
F*** yeah, cool.

I'm pickin' it up after work here then.

I though jerusalem was a bit disappointing, I hope this one is better. It was better live though, than on album. Saw him at the Fillmore, and he tore the friggin roof off, baby!

Another "I Feel Alright" or "El Corazon" would be REAL nice, ya know?

Steve is pretty much a God...
