New CNN Poll: Voters think Biden and Palin are equal debaters
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 06:42 PM by senseandsensibility
No link. I just saw it on CNN. Bill Schneider said that viewers don't know Biden at all, and they actually think Palin will do just as well as Biden in the debate. It went by fast, but the numbers were something like Biden 48, Palin 46.

So she isn't entering into the debate with low expectations. Apparently.

Oh, this is gonna be GOOD.
They had a talking head on MSNBC saying that the strategy for Palin will have to be that they give he 3-4 really good all-purpose talking points to just keep falling back on, rather than try and make her suddenly smart.

Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 06:19 PM by Jennicut
I don't want the expectations to be low for her because then all she has to do is stand there and make coherent sentences. We all know Joe well here but for many people they don't really know him so they don't realize his level of expertise vs. hers and that is good for us as well.

Biden is far more knowledgeable, experienced and eloquent than Palin could ever hope to be. But at the end of the day, if she gets 1 or 2 sound bytes or applause moments... the media... well we all know how that goes by now.

31. This will be an enormous issue for Biden to contend with.
If this debate is judged with sound muted, I am guessing the win would be for Pailure. She will be dressed well, presented well, and she will immediately take ths spotlight because she is the "attractive" woman taking on her opponent on the big stage. Many men will not listen to a word she says, rather look at the way she presents. She has a body language that commands the stage. She points a lot, she will scowl, and she will sneer, all in an expression of "passion" for the issues. It will be seen like this by many of the RW and I would venture to guess also by the independent men viewers.

Biden needs to act like he's debating a female senator. I hope he is training with videos from all of her debates and speeches to get a sense of the bizarre comments he will be asked to respond to. She will be a tough opponent for the mere fact that her responses will likely be direct attacks on Obama and completely off-topic, or they will be so poorly worded that deconstructing her language to respond is going to take more time than Biden may have. Biden must visciously stay on topic and constantly address Gwen's questions and maintain focus. If he can do this, Pailure will have a bit more difficult of a time veering off track, and it will become more clear when she is hitting rough water.

The most difficult thing for Biden, yes also the most crucial for him to find a way of dissecting will be Pailures true views on the issues. There is no reason to believe that Pailure will present her true extremist views unless asked very blunt questions by Gwen. If this is the case, Biden must sort out a strategy of digging quickly to the root of Pailure's beliefs through his responses and subsequent short questions to her. The majority of the public does not understand how right of right Pailure's views sit, and because of this, it will be Biden's job to really work at bringing those issues to the surface on the national stage.

My hope is that Gwen can pose very direct questions requiring short responses, but that the questions will drill right to the base of crucial issues since much of the country knows virtually nothing about Pailure or Biden for that matter. If Gwen steps into this debate with the motivation of wanting to paint for the nation a clear picture of who both of these candidates really are, then we will come out on top. If she chooses rather to skip around from topic to topic and not really drill down to any substantial concepts and philosophies, we are going to have a much more difficult time.

Now she's going to go up against Joe Biden, who is a knowledgeable speaker and a top-notch debater. She's going to puke on National television and run off stage. If they even let her walk out on stage.

43. I agree. Look at our discussion of last night's debate:
We talk about how McCain refused to look Obama in the eye, how he was hunched over the podium and looked old and tired. His tie was ugly. He grimaced and smirked while Obama talked. Those are all "sound off" observations. The same can happen to Biden.

...Biden is a much smoother and more forceful speaker than McCain, and his delivery is done with a smile. McCain's smile is probably the most forced I've ever seen, and his default state appears to be one of anger and contempt. Such an impression isn't offered by Biden, I don't think.

Even in the primary debates, * was held to very low expectations. When he answered the question about who was his favorite political philosopher by saying "Jesus Christ" and no one called bullshit, he won the debate. Same game in the fall, more or less. Anything can happen. It's not about skill, it's not even about performance. It's survivor island.

46. In this case, Joe's relatively lowered profile is working in our favor.
Despite Joe's tireless work stumping for Obama, his work as attack dog was marginalized by the media's love for shiny new objects of the moment. At least, that distraction is now working in our favor because it'll make Joe's victory that much more kick ass when he wows people who aren't expecting it. :D

Palin couldn't even fucking MEET the lowered bars with her interviews or the dumb fucking RNC speech that she uses as her stump speech. I seriously doubt that she will be able to meet the higher expectations of a 90 minute long debate.

NINETY MINUTES! She couldn't even take a 29 second long editorial presence at her meeting with Karzai!!!

those people have already chosen sides (how can they not?)

The debate is a grab for the low-info voters who vote with their "gut." And on that front, Sarah Palin is very much a threat. We'd be foolish not to recognize that. The good news is Joe Biden works the same play ground. It's going to be a bloodbath.

68. Oh, they'll pile on, all right
Just look how they responded to the Couric interview. If they actively show pity, that's even worse for her.

65. Do WHAT now?
Wow. Those folks are going to be quite surprised when Joe Cool wipes the floor with Miss Congeniality.

74. I doubt it. I suspect she's too clueless to even realize how ridiculously uninformed she sounds.

72. That's amazing!
How would they know? I mean, how many people have seen Palin debate? I haven't. I have no clue what kind of debater she is.

However, judging by her interviews and extremist bushrovian views, I'd say that her chances against Biden.. who CAN speak, think well, and debate.. are slim to none.
