1. Body language is very important -
What does not looking at your adversary mean?

Too chicken?

Know you are lying and won't do it mano-e-mano?

What?

(Matthews is talking right now about McCain's refusal to make eye contact.)

3. barely contained anger
I had a student who made me so absolutely furious that, when he was giving an oral report, I could not stand to look at him. I heard the other students whispering that I wouldn't even look at him. I know now what a mistake that was but I can say that I know what McCain was doing. He was absolutely furious that Obama dared to challenge him. McCain's ego is exceeded only by his senility.

6. when I'm deeply angry at a person
but biting back on it, it's hard to look them in the eye.

2. Exactly. Thank you.
And I did hear a couple of sighs from McCain as well.

5. And muffled sounds of protest. But I loved Obama's laugh
Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 11:42 PM by ailsagirl
Obama at one point looked at someone (the moderator?) and gave a knowing, kind of amused look while mcpin was speaking. It was early on.

7. He had to just laugh lots of times, knowing that McCain was lying his ass off, and
there was not enough time in the world to straighten him out.

8. And it was not a smirk-- his face just would break into a big grin
from time to time which I found very appealing. As one of the pundits said (on MSNBC - not gregory), Obama seemed to be having a good time while mclame was seething and sending out the most VILE vibes...

4. I hope you're right
Those sighs seemed like just a distraction at the time (well, to me they did, since I was screaming at the places where Gore was just sighing) but they become blown up into this Huge Thing.

I wonder if the microphone had been placed in just a slightly different place and the sighs hadn't been so magnified, whether he would have had a margin of victory big enough to even make up for what happened. (For want of a horseshoe, a kingdom was lost.... )

Anyway, I hope you're right about how a fairly small thing will turn into a major criticism of McCain.

9. Mr. MANative had to work last night and didn't get home until
after 11:30. I turned on a station that was repeating just a small clip of the debate - maybe 45 seconds. Hubby says "What's with McShit? Why won't he look Barack in the eye?" I had not prompted him in any way. It was very noticeable and a definite negative for the Pug camp. :bounce:

10. Not just the lack of eye contact
Also the "you just don't understand" and the muffled grumbling. McCain came off looking like a total dick. The only thing the Low Info Voter tkaes away from these debates is likability, and McCain's just a crotchety old asshole.
