A woman from Georgia called up Mike Malloy (I have the stream on delay) and said that she heard (I'm a terrible gossiper, I hope I get this right) that Zell Miller is believed to be suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's. Malloy asked Kathy in the booth if his behavior is consistent and she agreed (apparently she's had family members who have had it). It could very well be that Matthews knows this, or has heard whispers of it, and so didn't want to make things even worse. If that's true, it makes sense.
