Deja Vu? McCain backed out of 2000 California presidential debate
This week's events on the presidential campaign trail may be mind-boggling. But this is not the first time the Arizona Senator has withdrawn from a presidential debate; he did it in California in 2000 against George W. Bush.

At the time, polls showed he was lagging seriously behind the then-Texas Governor, and he said he would appear with the candidate on Sunday talk shows instead.

What happened? Facing severe blowback and criticism for his decision to shun a debate in the nation's most populous state, McCain finally agreed at the last minute to participate via video in the March 2 forum - a move which severely disadvantaged him.
