What does 9/11 tell us about Bush? Nothing.
What an EXCELLENT smacking-down of bush...and by a REPUBLICAN, no less!

Excerpts:

Pardon me for asking, but where exactly is the heroism in this story? Where, indeed, is the heroism in anything Bush has done before 9/11 or since?

Maybe Bush's courage is moral rather than physical. Maybe it lies in the conviction Giuliani extolled last night: "President Bush sees world terrorism for the evil that it is." Calling terrorism evil? Answering a deed with a word? This is courage?

Watching the attacks on Kerry and the glorification of Bush reminds me of something Dole said in his speech to the Republican convention eight years ago. It was "demeaning to the nation," Dole argued, to be governed by people "who never grew up, never did anything real, never sacrificed, never suffered and never learned."

You tell me which of this year's presidential candidates that statement best describes.

1. The Repubs have a magnificent marketing technique
Somehow they can -- strongly supported by US media -- turn black into white. Orwell would really be delighted.

2. They can try to sell it, but are the people buying?
I'm not watching the convention, so I don't know if they've mentioned the sterling economy yet. Around where I live, more and more locally owned stores are going out of business. These aren't recent startups-the youngest one has been in business over 30 years, the oldest over 130. We're seeing a slowdown in purchasing homes and cars. No one is hiring. Prices for gas and groceries are going up.

And then there's Iraq. Our local Guard unit came home, and had stories to tell. The local folks raised the funds for their body armor. These guys are wondering when they will be called back to duty. And 600 or so went to Green Forest for the funeral and internment of one young Lt. who was just killed over there (made the headlines in the local paper and was in the regional news).

People can be fooled by the tube only so long. They know what's going on in their own neighborhood. They know what is happening to their neighbors.

3. At least, roughly every second voter will vote for Bush
So, many people (whose processes of cognition are a mystery to me) seem to buy it.
