MSNBC: Obama Campaign Raises $66 Million In August - Biggest Yet. And McCain is now $ s-c-r-e-w-e-d!
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 10:42 AM by Mark E. Smith
Nice piece from MSNBC 'First Read:"
--------------------------------
A New York Times piece last Tuesday suggested that the Obama campaign's fundraising operation
was struggling to reach its ambitious fundraising goals.

Well, think again.

NBC News has learned that Obama raised $66 million in August -- his biggest monthly haul of
the campaign, which surpasses the more than $55 million the campaign raised in February. The
Obama camp also notes that it added an additional 500,000 donors to its fundraising base.

By comparison, McCain raised at least $47 million in August, which also amounted to his biggest
money month. Since the GOP convention, however, the Republican presidential nominee must now
rely on the $84 million he received from the federal government.
--------------------------------

McCain could be out of cash by mid October. More GOP ecoonomics, I guess. Maybe he'll try and
borrow some in true Republican style? From China?

2. I'm donating today.
I posted earlier this week that the amount that makes my new raise will be what I donate to Obama.

I'm hoping to be able to donate more in October! :bounce:

6. Thank you!
I also just donated to DU, so now I once again have a star!

I had to get my financial life in order before I could do so, and a small raise definitely helped!

:hi:

4. In the past, it seems the GOP has always outspent us.
Doesn't look like they're going to be able to do that this time.

And now that the 527s aren't reined in by the Obama campaign, they can let 'er rip!

Those 500,000 new donors just scream that America DOESN'T WANT MORE OF THE SAME. WE DON'T WANT MCCAIN, WE DON'T WANT PALIN, AND WE DON'T WANT A CONTINUATION OF BUSH POLICIES.

16. What each party raises needs to be considered and they are outraising us there
What Obama raised and what the DNC raised together is not as much as what McCain and the GOP raised (if I remember correctly).

We need $100 million per month combined.

We need some big donors to give to the party. That's what Obama was talking about earlier this month.

9. Good for you!
It feels good, doesn't it? I don't give big bucks, but do so regularly. Plus purchasing the Obama geer on his website also contributes to the cause.

10. Now that the GOP convention is over
is McCain locked into the fixed income of Public Funding or are they still allowed to fundraise?

12. Law says McCain can no longer fund raise
Whatever he has now needs to last him through the election. Obama, by refusing fed election money,
can continue to raise funds. This is an incredible advantage.

I think going into the last few weeks of this campaign McCain and the Moose Murderer will be literally
helpless.

17. no, it is matching funds from the feds
he can raise $80 million and he gets $80 million

remember, that does not count what the GOP raises which is still substantially more than the DNC raises.

11. Kind of makes you question those polls doesn't it?
Fortunately, people who contribute even 5 or 10 dollars (or indeed nothing at all) get the same one vote as those that contribute thousands.

19. A quick google search
and I found an article on Bloomberg saying that the RNC has outraised the DNC by about $100m so far. That's how McCain can even up spending with Obama. Bottom line: give more, and give to both Obama and the DNC!

22. The MSM is trying to help McCain by claiming that Obama
donors are getting burned out on donating money because it's been going on for a long time.

I think they are liars and trying to sway donors.

23. The problem is the DNC...... they suck ass at raising funds.
At the end of the convention McCain had $40 mil. By public financing rules he can't use it in the GE so he "gave it" to the RNC.
RNC left convention with $100 mil and McCain gets check from taxpayers for $85 mil.

So day after convention McCain & RNC had $185 mil.
McCain can raise $20 mil for a "compliance fund".
RNC says they will raise $100 mil just for McCain campaign by Nov 4th (and seeing as they are having $38,000 dinners I think it is possible).

So McCain's total warchest
$85 mil = public financing
$20 mil = compliance fund
$200 mil = RNC (current + "goal")
===============
$305 mil.

Obama left convention with $60 mil I believe.
DNC had another $50 mil
Obama is going to "bank in the $$$" for last 2 months. Likely $75 mil per month = +$150mil

So Obama warchest
$210 mil = Obama current + forcasted fundraising
$50 mil = DNC current bank
???? mil = DNC fundraising allocated for Obama by Nov 4
============
So Obama has $250 mil(ish) + whatever DNC can raise.

The big question is will the DNC suck yet again at raising money?
Where is Pelosi?
Where is Reid?
Where is Bill Clinton?
Why aren't all the popular senators, govenors, congressmen raising money for DNC in their home states?

If the DNC knocks out some big $$$$ then Obama will be able to outspend McCain.
If the DNC fall on the ass (like they do every year in fundraising dept) then Obama gets outspent.

Obama is doing everything possible (raised like $400 mil), the DNC needs to step up to the plate.
