Ohio Poll (University of Cincinnati) has McCain up -- 48% to 44%
http://ipr.uc.edu/documents/op091208.pdf

I know, I know, it's another poll; it's almost the Quinnepiac poll in reverse, at that. But it does have some interesting -- and troubling -- factoids:

-- 23% of likely voters are up in the air.
-- 9% may change their minds as for whom to vote by November
-- 4% are undecided.

Right now, says the poll, more Democrats may cross party lines to vote GOP (11%) than Republicans to cross over to vote Democratic (5%).

In short, Ohio will be in play up until and probably past Election Day.

No news here, but it does underscore just how much work needs to be done in this state. (Even in Southwest Ohio, with a failing economy, McCain is ahead.

1. Perhaps that's why Obama/Biden are now declaring their support for the Second Amendment. Their
position on the right to keep and bear arms can win or lose elections in swing states like OH, PA, MI, FL.

Gore and Kerry learned that lesson too late and I hope Obama doesn't make the same mistake.

3. If the economy alone does not swing Ohio Democratic...
...then this state truly is a lost cause.

Also, McCain is pouring a SHITLOAD of ad dollars in Southwest Ohio, where I'm at. I rarely see an Obama ad, and when I do, it's not particularly effective. McCain, on the other hand, has an ad during almost every station break during the day, and during the newscasts at night. It's McCain, McCain, McCain all the damned time. Obama's campaign needs to start ramping it up media-wise in these parts.

4. Facts are a few divisive-polarizing issues, each with a few per cent supporters can easily yield
twenty plus percent vote for a candidate.

Add that to thirty percent hard core voters like me who always vote a straight party ticket and a candidate will win.

8. Obama is pouring a shitload of ad dollars
into Southeast Ohio. From what I have heard SW Ohio is going to go Republican no matter what. SE Ohio is 2 to 1 registered Democrats and supported Hillary 2 to 1 in the primaries. If he can get SE Ohio's support he will carry Ohio I think.

2. Forget Ohio
They like their republicans. Good for them. We need to expand the table to the west. Focus on Missouri, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. If Ohio wants to vote with the solid red south, good for her.

9. Forget Ohio! Has any Democrat ever been elected
President without Ohio lately? Ohio is very diverse state and represents the country as a whole. "As Ohio goes so goes the nation", we learned that in Ohio History back in elementary school. All the pundants I hear say the election will be decided in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Floridah.

7. I just don't understand Ohio
I'm not an expert on the state's politics, but its voting pattern on the presidential level frustrates me like no other.

10. It's race.
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 11:41 AM by falcon97
I grew up in Cincinnati, which is in a stronghold Republican county. But the stretch of counties that run along the Ohio River to the east are completely different than much of the rest of the state. That's why it's proving harder that for Kerry.

I'm not saying OH can't be won. I just think the most logical path to 270 is Kerry States + IA + NM + CO.

12. You're right I live in SE Ohio and race is a big part of it
but this area is 2-1 registered Democrat. Obama has been here a couple times lately and I think if people see him and get used to him and if he can get Gov. Strickland's support he can our votes. After all this is the poorest part of the state and the areas most affected by the bush economy. One weak spot the democrats have here is Bill Clinton's NAFTA. But go figure Hillary got 2/3 of the vote in the primary.
