Obama mocks McCain as computer illiterate
Obama mocks McCain as computer illiterate

By NEDRA PICKLER
Associated Press Writer

snip//

"He admits he still doesn't know how to use a computer, can't send an e-mail, still doesn't understand the economy, and favors two hundred billion in new tax cuts for corporations, but almost nothing for the middle class," it says. It shows video of McCain getting out of a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush and closes with a photo of him standing with the current President Bush at the White House. "After one president who was out of touch, we just can't afford more of the same."

Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said the campaign was not making an issue of the 72-year-old McCain's age, but the time he's spent in Washington.

"Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," Pfeiffer said. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."

McCain has said he relies on his wife and staff to work the computer for him and that he doesn't use e-mail.

The ad is being coupled with another positive spot that highlights Obama's change message, arguing he will provide better health care and tax breaks and bring people together.

A spokesman for the Republican National Committee, Alex Conant, accused Obama of "trying to destroy" McCain and running mate Sarah Palin with personal attacks.

2. I mean, seriously... a president that can't send an e-mail, or use Google?
This is serious incompetence.

It's not even about "being smart enough" to use computers. I'm sure the man could learn. It's that he chose NOT to learn.

10. the biggest problem i have with mccain's illiteracy via computers....
go to a job interview. for virtually ANY job. minimum wage on up. it is a requirement for an ENTRY LEVEL job!!! i do believe it should be a requirement to be president in the 21st century. it's like electing a president who can't read. would we elect a president who couldn't read?!? computer literacy is THAT important.

25. This is so damn true. I'm amazed at how some DUers here don't get that.
There've been a few posts that actually tried to push the notion that it's "elitist" to expect the POTUS to know how to use a mouse. Give me a break! The only jobs you can get in this country if you're unable to use e-mail or the web are day labor jobs. You can't even apply for many jobs in person anymore -- you have to use the web or e-mail to submit your resume.

How can McCain lead the country to compete on the world stage if he lacks the basic literacy knowledge of the 21st century?

In this day and age, it truly is like electing a candidate who can't read.

5. Oh, poor, poor Alex Conant!

I'm sure these so-called personal attacks widdle Awex is crying about could have been avoided if McCain hadn't demanded that Obama do town hall style meetings with him. ;-)

7. Not only destroy him
leave him in the dust.

I think they should have more stuff about how old he is and then use the Palin interview to scare the shit out of people. Bring back the little girl with the flower. This time a "President Palin" goes "nucklur"

back in the nineties? Why didn't he ask for his help if he thought that Gore was claiming that?

13. Personal?
Issues about his basic competence to function in and his understanding of the modern world? I dont think so. It's not like his focusing on his adultery or his compulsive gambling, though the latter really ought to be brought into the discussion because it tells us a lot about his personality.

14. Personal Computers have been in households for 30 years!! Why the HELL hasn't he
made an attempt to catch up with the rest of america??

I guess he's too good to live like the rest of us.

He probably doesn't drive his own car or cook his own food either.
I also have a strong feeling he has no idea what a bar code scanner is.. much like George Sr. in 1992.

DUMB. AS. FUCK.

16. This isn't about age. My parents are in their 80s & use computers, send emails-are now learning text
It's not about age - it's about a sense of curosity and a willingness to try new things. Two qualities that would be GOOD to have in a president - for a change.

28. So true. It's not about age at all. It's about being incurious, showing no interest in the present.
That's what this says about him.

He could learn if he wanted to. And you'd think he'd want to! But lacks the curiosity and initiative to find out for himself.

19. I think its a bad strategy and could backfire
A lot of people can't use a PC competently - hell, my dad is a Chemical Engineer and he still calls me to help him out with his e-mail and computer problems. I know plenty of people around my office that aren't that good with a computer and some even come to me for assistance, even though I'm not IT!

I get the point that they are trying to attack McCain for being "OLD" and "Out of Touch" - because he is - but the way to do that isn't by insulting him over a point that over 50% of all Americans are computer illiterate. I think this is a bad move and will be countered and capitalized on immediately by the McCain campaign.

Are you joking? How do you think grandparents stay in touch with their families in different states these days?

There are not "lots of older voters" who don't know how to send email. That ship sailed in 1995 or thereabouts. Don't be fucking silly.
