Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 12:46 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Okay, let's say that it was discovered that McCain takes Alzheimer's medication (unsubstantiated DU crystal-ball breaking news of the day over in GD)

First, could he stay on the ticket. Let's assume not.

So if McCain stood down the only sensible move, given the time pressure, would be to replace him with Romney, keeping Palin at VP. (Romney has the candle-power to ease into running on a moment's notice and is the choice of the inside-the-beltway conservatives.)

The question is, how bad would fundy reaction get to Palin being denied her God-mandated spot at the top of the ticket?

Are we talking self-immolation? Bombings? Or even... *gasp* not voting?

__________

Other scenarios are, of course, open to discussion: McCain staying on ticket, Someone other than Romney, elevating Palin, etc.

2. Not to mention the fact that they'll never vote for a Mormon, which is the only reason, IMHO,
Romney didn't win the primary.

first, after the Washington Post?

What other page should I have on auto refresh?!

9. It'll drive the fundies nuts. Most would chew their arm off before they'd vote for Romney.
Wek as it is, I don't think the rnc is yup to the task of selling that ticket at all since the first sell would have to be to their strongest base.

16. 8 months ago, most would've done the same before they'd vote for McCain

Don't underestimate their zeal to get ANYONE in there but Obama.

24. True--one thing we tend to underestimate is the republicans remarkable
ability to unify their party against voting AGAINST any Democratic opponent.

5. Any other candidate should be able to pick their own running mate...
My fear is they would put Palin at the top of the ticket! They are just crazy enough to do that.

"Oh I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain,
That's when I knew that I could not refuse.
And I won't get any older, now the angels wanna wear my red shoes.

11. They have a whiff of winning now. They probably wouldn't elevate Palin.
The big boys sense an opening and they know Palin couldn't win. (She would have to be interviewed and I figure since they've talked to her... they know better than I do why she can't meet the press.)

And their bench isn't real deep.

Now if Ahnuld could run... Schwarzenegger/Palin would be the freak show to end all. Would win easily.

God bless the constitution!

7. false premise: that he can't stay on the ticket
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 12:49 PM by onenote
Let's assume the story is true. My bet is that the answer will be (and various doctors will be trotted out to attest to this claim) that the drug is effective in treating mild to moderate case of early stage Alzheimer's and that with the medication he is as good as "normal".

BS? Sure But if (and its all a big if at the moment) alzheimer's meds is the disclosure, that's going to be the response. He'll tough it out. It will hurt him with a lot of voters, but not with the base (who will be excited to learn that Palin could play an even bigger role in a McCain presidency than they hoped).

8. Who was Runner Up in The Primaries?
Didn't Huckabee get the next highest number of electors? Wouldn't they turn to him?

Would they even replace him?

10. If Palin isn't the presidential candidate..
..fundy support plummets.

The whole Republican strategy rests on a largely-unspoken strategy: "vote for the GOP ticket, he'll die, and she'll ascend into the Oval Office! Glory be!"

With a younger, healthier person at the top of the ticket and Palin staying as the running mate, that strategy is nixed - and fundy turnout drops precipitously.

Intriguing!

But would Romney or Huckabee be resentful being passed-over in such a manner?

Wouldn't they be taking a risk of alienating the base to put anyone but the second place guy in at the top?
