The "List" as it is circulated is a fake. However, she did ask the local librarian if she were willing to banning books from the library. The librarian said no. Palin tried to get her fired but she was popular and so Palin backed down.
Palin asked the librarian about the possibility of removing books on more than one occasion. The thing is that there were no books specified because she was rebuffed by the librarian. The book list, as circulated on the web, is false. However, the core of the story is true.
As to what Palin wanted banned is anyone's guess.
However, logic would indicate it would be in line with her church, Assemblies of God, which is well known to the American Library Association and other institutions as being keen on book burning. There are specific books they have burned or "cut up" if the local fire marshall wouldn't let them have a bonfire and that list varies from church to church and event to event.
But make no mistake, Palin was very invested in censorship.
If that doesn't make you scared as hell, I'm not sure what will.
There's a saying in German that goes something like this "those that burn books will eventually burn human beings". They have a lot of experience with that. Take their word for it.
