My mother is terrified of them. All things with fur freak her out alot if they touch her. Dogs, Cats...even horses. But especially cats.

The back story is that my mother grew up desperately poor in the depression. My grandmother raised 5 boys and a girl all alone. In one apt when she was very young my mom had a mattress in the attic. The neighborhood strays would come in at night crawl all over her, sometimes even nip at her and scare her. Soon her new bedroom was a mattress under the dinner table.

What is it about cats that they hate or fear? Well, I did get a clue from a friend of mine whom I taught to like cats. She said it was the eyes. I guess because they can narrow to slits. They can appear reptilian or snakelike. Once she was able to overlook that, she started appreciating the finer aspects of cats. Now as far as the dictators, I think they don't like the independence that cats display. They prefer dogs because dogs are by nature subservient and take orders.

You can calm down now. No one's going to hurt you." And they did! They quit barking and wagged their cute little tails at me. It was amazing. I've never seen anything quite like it.
