My Wife And I Have Been Considering An Alaskan Cruise Next Year
It was just one of the options we've been considering to celebrate our tenth anniversary. It wasn't high on my wife's list but had been at the top of mine.

I'm going to tell her to scratch that possibility off the list after seeing what Alaskans choose as an 80% approved governor.

Sorry, I can't contribute to an economy that would support a Sarah Palin. Europe is sounding like the best option to me now. Besides, Europe is my wife's current number 1 choice, so I'm sure she won't object to removing one obatacle to that choice.

1. Also my niece & new husband took one for their honeymoon
and were not that happy with it. They said it was okay and are glad they went but won't go again. She said the ports they went to were very touristy and it was just not worth the money.

2. The scenery is beautiful, but....
The politics up there is definitely backwards. Visiting, especially now, could induce cognitive dissonance.

Europe? Let me put in a plug for Spain. I've been there five times and I love it! You can do the "obvious" tour (Madrid, Seville, Barcelona) or go for something more exotic like the Pyrenees. My favorite visit was to the lesser-known north coast. Cantabria is beautiful, and wait till you see Santiago de Compostela (NW corner)!

we ran out of time, didn't make it to NW corner or Atlantic coast.

3. Do you use oil? Eat fish? Gold? Wood?
You may well be contributing to the economy there anyway. As for Europe - they elect leaders like Sarkozy and Berlusconi. Is that something to support?

I'm not trying to say you should go to Alaska, but your logic seems a little flawed.

6. Doesn't mean you can't be realistic about the reasons or the impact
I'll spare you the 'duh' back atcha.

Seriously, why can't some people here just have a fucking conversation without sarcasm and attitude?

10. I don't use oil from Alaska
most of that gets shipped elsewhere.

I sometimes eat fish, but not from Alaska. I don't like salmon and I don't eat Alaskan King Crab.

I don't buy gold, but if I did, I'd buy Canadian MAple Leafs.

The wood I've used doesn't come from Alsak. Most Alaskan lumber is shopped overseas.

7. You already contribute to Alaska's economy. It lives off oil and federal pork.

After all, Europeans will be elated to meet an American who helped get Obama in the White House. Jus' sayin'.

11. I would love to go to Alaska
Individuals can be nice, even if you disagree with their politics. Take it in and enjoy it. I also want to visit the deep south, where I've never been, but every time I am close to going it gets wrecked by a hurricane. Same reasoning there, lots of history, lots to see, different culture; sure I disagree with the politics, but the people can be nice. We are not a red America or a blue America, we are the United States of America. We shouldn't cut ourselves off from each other.

Go for it, and enjoy the cruise.

15. You know, you're probably right about the people as individuals.
One of the most fascinating things about right-wingers, especially in the countryside, is that despite their strange beliefs and sometimes odious political/social views, most of them are about as nice and helpful as you could want anyone to be. I wish they would straighten out their thinking though.

16. Europe - you will not regret it.
Gorgeous cities, beaches, culture, nature - you name it, whatever you want, its all there.

Plus, real news, an informed citizenry for the most part, and no Repukes!
