And the mayoral campaigns were usually brutal. Of course, my hometown was also corrupt beyond belief. The citizens tended to break into two camps: (1) those who wouldn't believe their neighbor was a crook if you found a bag of thousand dollar bills stashed in the freezer and (2) those who had or were hoping to obtain a bag of thousand dollar bills stashed in the freezer.
