So Republicans aren't Americans?
Cindy McCain just quoted her husband, saying "This is a time when we take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats."

Gee, I'm a Democrat, but I'm also always an American.

Does that kind of multi-tasking confuse Republicans?

At least they're finally admitting it. ;)

2. No. You can't be both a Republican and an American.
I hear'd John McCain say it hisself.

3. An Americans first loyalty is to their country. Republicans first loyalty is to the party.
They're like Communists in that way.

4. They have been accusing us "liberals" of not being Americans since 2001
I didn't know that being American was something you could turn on and off.

7. And soon I'll take off my daddy hat and put on my hubby hat.
Everybody has different roles to play. "Hat" = "role". Of course, my wife is sick, so that actually means "cook's hat" and "nurse's hat".

Not that I usually cook my patients. But there's overlap there.

Looking for the meaning that's probably intended, not merely checking that the meaning you want to be there is absent, is a big help in comprehension. (As if that's actually what's wanted. It's a very inconvenient way of doing things.)

11. I'm an American first
I was born that way.

I chose to be a Democrat. That in no way keeps me from being an American. John McCain's comment suggests that you can be either a Republican or an American, not a very salubrious way of viewing the electorate.

15. He meant to say "our fictional good and decent American hats. "
Most republicans are Americans but few republicans are good and decent Americans.
