The Republicans have always beat us by making us look like unacceptable freaks
For all of those counseling "hold fire," I say, think about the political nightmares we have lived through at their expense. Gays with the means and maturity to raise children have been vilified and politically marginalized by the Right, and their desire for equal rights has been used as a wedge issue nationally. Blacks and other minorities have been typecast as hateful, evil, moral cripples. Our patriotism has been ridiculed, as have our moral values and our family lives.

The Obama/Biden campaign doesn't have to do anything with this. The impulse of the Democratic base and its constituent parts to do to the Right what they've always done to us, on the other hand, should not be stifled.

The Palins are an American freak show, the likes of which we have never seen at the national campaign level. More important, the outcomes of their beliefs and lifestyle is everything we worry about when it comes to the issue of choice and religious tyranny. To give such people access to power is unacceptable, because they are personally unacceptable. This is the same message that has been hung around our necks in campaign after campaign, going back to Nixon and even beyond. Turnabout is not only fair and proper, in this case, it's essential.

2. You are correct.
We just let McCain spend the last month equating Obama with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. But heaven forbid if we make the same comparisions....Sarah Palin was a bad, irresponsible, pandering pick by McCain and it says a lot about his judgement that he would pick her without researching her background at all.

6. We are the party of mainstream America; the Palins have given us the chance to claim what is ours
Time to take it.

4. Actually, I agree with you to an extent, but they are not a freakshow.
The Palin family is the typical republican evangelical family. That's one of the differences between our parties. We don't believe that Ozzie and Harriet or Ward and June are the REAL American family and we don't throw a coat of shellac on the surface and pretend otherwise. Dysfunction is part of the package of human interaction and expecting us all to pretend we are Stepford Families and trying to legislate us all into cookie cutter nuclear idealism is a ridiculous waste of time and money and does nothing to address real problems.

It's just another coat of shellac.
