For all of those counseling "hold fire," I say, think about the political nightmares we have lived through at their expense. Gays with the means and maturity to raise children have been vilified and politically marginalized by the Right, and their desire for equal rights has been used as a wedge issue nationally. Blacks and other minorities have been typecast as hateful, evil, moral cripples. Our patriotism has been ridiculed, as have our moral values and our family lives.
The Obama/Biden campaign doesn't have to do anything with this. The impulse of the Democratic base and its constituent parts to do to the Right what they've always done to us, on the other hand, should not be stifled.
The Palins are an American freak show, the likes of which we have never seen at the national campaign level. More important, the outcomes of their beliefs and lifestyle is everything we worry about when it comes to the issue of choice and religious tyranny. To give such people access to power is unacceptable, because they are personally unacceptable. This is the same message that has been hung around our necks in campaign after campaign, going back to Nixon and even beyond. Turnabout is not only fair and proper, in this case, it's essential.
