He went down there, found from his briefings with the Republican governors that the right things were being done (I guess in order to tell us that the right things were being done? I'm unclear on how he would have figured out that they weren't being done, and what he would have been able to do about it, and why he was necessary to relay this information).

Then he stood bravely and absorbed enough of the force of the storm that it degraded to category 2. Then he pushed it west from New Orleans to keep it down to nothing more than wind and spills.
