On the Obama address from Denver tonight --

- - - -

In the prison of his days
Teach the free man how to praise

- - - -

That is a couplet from Auden's elegy to William Butler Yeats. It seems fitting to tender it tonight in the aftermath of one of the most dazzlingly substantive addresses I've ever heard.

Obama is a one-house fellow citizen, a neighborhood-builder, and as hard-bitten a realist as they come. And in his building-up, he wears poetry like a gown of wind and is a king for it.

What a thin gruel we have been served for 8 years. And how hungrily we listened to Obama tonight along the Front Range.

I don't think any of us who weren't there have to ask the delegates and others who were how they liked the address in Denver by our next president.
