McCain Still Trying to Find Spectators
According to the Dayton Daily News, Sen. John McCain is still giving away tickets to his Friday rally where he will unveil his running mate. He's having trouble filling a 10,000 seat arena.

The contrast with Sen. Barack Obama giving a speech before 75,000 people tonight is striking and speaks to the excitement factor between the candidates. Obama tickets have been sold out for weeks.

1. And yet we're constantly being told that they're in a dead heat in the polls.
Sure they are.

20. Considering that Gallup only polls Repuglicans, that's probably true!
They poll during the day to land lines only. Who is home during the day answering their land line?

17. that will much it slightly more credible when they try to steal this election as well.
on the other hand, ann richards went into the election with a 60% approval rating, and yet chimpy ended up as the gov. of texas. so, apparently, 2000 wasn't the first election he stole.

3. And Obama filled the venue lickety-split
earlier this year.

Dayton was a stupid, stupid, stupid choice. Consistently blue with a 9.2% unemployment rate.

Stupid.

9. With 9.2% unemployment maybe they figured that there would be a lot of people available.

6. that. is. hilarious.
Was watching MSNBC and couldn't help noticing how stoked KO, Matthews, Maddock were. There was a real electricity in the air. It will be hard for them to drum up any enthusiasm next week. I won't be watching so I won't know.

10. I was talking to a friend last night about how the poll #'s don't make sense,
and how much we enjoyed all the different speakers this week, and we both said "We really SHOULD watch at least some of next week's coverage, but neither of us know if we can stand it or not." I really don't want to lose my voice from screaming or throwing something at the TV!

14. Amen. Nope-- I'd be a masochist if I watched it. Couldn't stomach it
I'll just lay off all media next week-- including DU-- because I don't want to hear a peep about what McSame is up to and the ugly smears that will ooze out of that venue...

:puke:

11. I don't understand how this is possible.
McCain is suppose to be dead even in the polls. He's suppose to have hundreds of thousands of supporters (at least) in the area. Why can't he fill a rally? Why aren't his supporters supporting him? Why aren't they excited about him? Why aren't they coming to see the man they hope to put in power of our beautiful country? Why?

24. My disset on this is
I remember in '04 people saying they saw 3 times as many kerry yard signs, etc. Obama's voters are much more enthusiastic but there votes count the same. Lots of repubs don't give a shit about anything but they show up and vote onelection day to stop the Dem bogeyman of the day. Don't be swayed by these bits of circumstantial evidence.

25. This is not "circumstantial" (sic) evidence
These are raw facts, not anecdotes. They may not apply to the world outside of Dayton, but this town hates McCain with a vengeance.

OTOH, so does Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Toledo, and Columbus. And Canton. And Springfield.

Gonna be much harder to steal this one.

27. Stealing a thought from The Atlantic
Imagine McCain's much-anticipated veep announcement during a rally which fails to draw the modest 10,000 capacity.

In a normal world, what would be the story?
