Who was the first President you ever voted for (or are going to vote for!)
Knowing that bill is speaking tonight warms my heart and made me nostalgic. At 18 in 1992, I voted for Bill Clinton as my first President. he made me excited, hopeful and happy. I feel that way again, thanks Senator Obama.

So who was yours?

Back then the bumper sticker after that election said:

"Nixon - 49... America - 1"

That's because my state was the only state that did NOT elect Nixon! :P

Jimmy Carter, when he ran against Reagan.
But I was pissed when I went to vote, because Carter had conceded to Reagan, and they announced it on the radio just as I was pulling into my driveway after work. My voting place was the school next door. I voted anyway, but damn, I was pissed!

That's why voting rights are sooooooooo important to me.

Yes, Reagan would probably have won anyway, even if the fucking news hadn't blabbed, but I felt absolutely disenfranchised that year.

At least now, the media keeps their yaps shut a little longer.

I had just turned 18 that year, and 18-year-olds had just been given the vote (thank you, Senator Jennings Randolph!). My older sister, who was 23, was really cheesed off that she and I would both get our first chance to vote for president the same year, despite the five-year age difference.

She got over it. But neither of us ever got over Nixon's win!

I was born in September 1948 and the voting age was 21 until 1972. So then I would have voted for the first time in 1972 even though I worked on McCarthy's campaign in 1968. So then it would be George McGovern. Yes, I had to reason it out...sue me.

I am a Party Animal. I either vote the "D" or not at all. I have yet to encounter a Republican on a ballot who wasn't either a stupid sack of shit, or a lying asshat - and they were usually both.

116. I'll second that...
I knew the results would be bad, but I had no idea they'd be that bad.

And here's what I don't get. Given the economic disaster that WAS the Reagan Administration, and given that Dubya followed the same script and achieved a equal (or even worse) disaster, I find it hard to believe that there are sentient human beings in this world who still buy this Supply Side bullshit.

What more evidence do they need that this theory is a load of steaming crap?

60. Ford in 1976
and I was sorry later that day when a girlfriend told me how wonderful a man Jimmy Carter was. Ford is the only Republican I've ever voted for, so I guess it wasn't too bad.

I thought it was good to vote for the incumbent because he already knew how to do the job. Not the worst of reasons- but it makes me realize how many people there are out there every election who know as little as I did that year.

First vote in a presidential election was for Dukakis in 1988. First vote for a presidential winner was Bill Clinton in 1992. I'm 43. I could have voted in 1984 and I really regret now that I didn't. I just didn't care about politics then.

Was the first time I cast a vote of my own. My Dad always let me mark his ballot when I was a small boy, so the first one I remember marking was for LBJ. But that was his vote....he taught me well, he did not really care for LBJ, but he voted Democratic always. The alternative was the bad guy.
First Convention I remember was Chicago 68. This one seems smooth as silk by comparison.

I was a senior in college, and I voted via absentee ballot. I was so scared that the ballot wouldn't show up in time. When it did (exactly one week before Election Day), I shouted for joy and went to lunch. Afterward, I locked myself in my dorm room, carefully punched the right candidates on my ballot, and tossed it in the mailbox.

To this day, I believe it WAS counted! :patriot:

I was old enough to vote in 1976 (18) but not eligible to vote for President because I lived in Puerto Rico at the time and you can't vote for President there.

In 1987 I moved back to the mainland. At the time I wasn't really that much into politics.

Now I am much more aware of the issues so in hindsight, knowing what I know now, I would have voted for Dukakis.

in '04, of course. I was 18, my first election. Though it was bitterly dissapointing at the end, I still feel proud of my vote...and still have a "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for KERRY" icon displayed proudly on my Myspace. ;)

Still love the man, esp. after his speech last night! :) He doesn't get enough respect, IMO..

But re-reading the original post, I should probably re-phrase and say that I haven't , obviously, voted for someone who ended up being elected President...yet. That will change on Election Day this year, though..;) *Crosses fingers*

171. Carter/Mondale for the raygun landslide '80
I blame Anderson for the eight rude years that followed. two heinous bumper stickers of the bush senior era "reagan eight great years" and "aids cures fags" on a family station wagon in rural va.

Nostalgia is a false comfort: things were definitely way more fucked up in the past, no kidding

I turned 18 just in time. Every election since then has been heartbreaking for me, so hopefully 2008 will be different!

177. I've never voted for a winner.
Turned 18 in 1998, voted for Gore and Kerry.

Actually, this was the first time I even voted for the eventual primary winner, after going for Bradley and Dean.
