Brian Schweitzer: Proof that pro-gun Democrats are needed in our party
The good Governor just delivered a kick-ass speech, and I think the walls of the arena shook when he got the Democrats shouting so that the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan could hear them.

18. Glad to see many more of us!
I'm glad to tell people I'm a gun-owning liberal. Usually brings some wide-eyes and puzzled looks, and then I move in to make my case! Usually turns into a good conversation!

Cheers! :toast: :toast:

7. He's pro-gun, as am I, but we're from Montana
I think anybody who has a pragmatic view can understand that gun laws in Montana are going to be quite a bit different than say the laws in New York or California, for example. And Brian definitely understands that.

8. Which means we definitely don't need any nationwide gun bans

They're not fair to you Montanans, and they're not fair to us Texans, either. Our states rock! :hi:

10. not fair at all
That's a definite case where the individual states and communities know best. Sharing gun info nationally, that stuff can work, but any blanket bans etc, that's iffy because of cultural differences. I'm not even really a hunter or anything either, but about everybody I know is, and I respect that.

12. Why not?
What's wrong with law-abiding Americans exercising their rights?

Remember, if our government obeys its own laws, then they've got nothing to worry about...

17. Actual Uzi's are already very tightly controlled by Federal law,
since they are NFA Title 2 restricted automatic weapons, and precisely zero have been imported for non-government use since the McClure-Volkmer Act closed the door in 1986.

"Assault weapons," on the other hand, are non-automatic civilian (NFA Title 1) guns, mostly civilian target rifles and defensive carbines. The AR-15, for example, is the most popular centerfire target rifle in the United States, as well as the most popular defensive carbine. Collectively, more of us own "assault weapons" than hunt.

Rifles of any description aren't used to "hunt people" in this country. Less than 3% of U.S. murders involve any type of rifle, "assault weapon" or not.

but Cheneys example aside, we can't just shoot them all.

13. His line about drilling in John McCain's backyards (even the ones he can't remember) was great
I like his spirit. And even he is far too polite. They need to get nasty on McCain. As a commenter at TPM said tonight, it's not that McCain is the same as Bush: he's far worse, and that is the point they have to make, again and again and again.

Overall, I sense the nonconfrontational stench of Tom Daschle, the weakest "leader" this party has had in the last 10 years. His influence with Obama has me dismayed. Obama and Daschle both must have seen a very different election in 2004 than I did. Their strategy so far is weaksauce, though last week was very good, nice to see them finally get some punches in. Keep swinging!

And always keep in mind Josh Marshall's Bitch-slap Theory of Politics: it's not about winning the argument on details. It's about forcing the agenda, drawing attention away from the moral and political bankruptcy of the GOP. They must be attacked forcefully, before they have time to establish their themes. They must be kept off-balance. Where is the fight?

WE DON'T WANT YOU TO PLAY FUCKING NICE!!!
