Sojourner's Voting Guide (FREE)

Sojourner's has a very good Voting Guide that can be downloaded, or ordered, for free. It's great to send to friends or relatives who are on the fence about the "moral issues" and are beginning to question the right wing framing of these issues. I think they can also be ordered in larger quantities to be distributed at churches or other groups. As a side note, a right-wing voters guide from a group called Catholic Answers had a huge distribution in 2004. It listed 5 Non-negotiable issues (abortion, gay marriage, etc) and was placed as inserts in the church bulletins at many Catholic churches. They also took out full page ads in USA Today and other papers. They were challenged under IRS statutes for distributing it in churches and recently WON the ruling. They are seriously gearing up for a major distribution of their voter's guides again this year. I'm hoping that the Sojourner's guide will get an equally wide distribution to try and help counter this.

Sad thing is, I know a lot of Dem Catholics who were really torn up about this non-negotiable stuff in 2004. They were getting the Catholic Answers guides in Church bulletins and felt like they were being told that they would literally go to hell if they voted Dem. I've noticed some right-wing talkers using the phrase "non-negotiables" lately and I think it's tied to the IRS ruling and the big push that's on to get these guides out.

6. There is a group called Catholic Democrats who will not.

They began as a group camaigning for Kerry in 2004, so that should give you an idea of their politics. To them, their Catholic faith is what causes their political beliefs; uncertain Catholics can read their writings and realize that it's ok to vote for these candidates that the Catholic church is bashing. I know the man who is head of the group, and I even did some Kerry campaigning with them back then (as a non-Catholic Christian). They're a good group and they show that it's ok to be both Catholic and progressive.

I wish this type of thing would get more attention on DU. It's such a good, FREE resource. I know lots of people are turned off by religious stuff but Sojourner's does such a beautiful job of laying out the issues.
