AP Headline: "Swift Boat Writer Lied on Cambodia Claim"
Not misrepresented: lied.

WASHINGTON - The chief critic of John Kerry's military record told President Nixon in 1971 that he had been in Cambodia in a swift boat during the Vietnam War — a claim at odds with his recent statements that he was not.

"I was in Cambodia, sir. I worked along the border," said John E. O'Neill in a conversation that was taped by the former president's secret recording system. The tape is stored at the National Archives in College Park, Md.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, O'Neill did not dispute what he said to Nixon, but insisted he was never actually in Cambodia.

"I think I made it very clear that I was on the border, which is exactly where I was for three months. I was about 100 yards from Cambodia," O'Neill said in clarifying the June 16, 1971, conversation with Nixon.

1. Other than 11/3's "Kerry Wins" this is one of the best AP Headlines ever!
Funny how it took drudge 24 hours to finally link to it - he could have had a "World Exclusive" last night if he had listened to us!

3. He said he was in Cambodia to advance his agenda back then,

he says he wasn't in Cambodia to advance his agenda now.

He attacked John Kerry back then, and attacks him now, to advance his agenda.

4. Yahoo got a call from the White House - look at the headline now!
Swift Boat Author Addresses Contradiction

This should be a major scandal - Yahoo fucking changed the headline to make it look better for O'Neill. If you subpoena the phone records for Yahoo or AP, you can bet your life that they got a call from someone close to Bush - not from the Swift Boat people, but from someone related to Bush's campaign. Of course, some of the people in the Swift group are also in the Bush campaign, so I'm sure that is the excuse they would use.

Too bad we don't have the money or lawyers to try to find out who pressured Yahoo to change the headline.

Earlier this morning it was back to 'lied', now it's back to 'addresses'.

Interesting.

12. From SBVT-Gate: The File (in DU's Editorials)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x70032

<snip>

COLMES: You said to Richard Nixon you were in Cambodia.

. . .

HANNITY: On the border.

COLMES: There's a tape of you saying that to Richard Nixon.

O'NEILL: What's the next sentence? I was along the Cambodian border.
That's exactly right. What I told Nixon and was trying to tell him in this
meeting was I was along the Cambodian border.

<snip>

http://mediamatters.org/items/200408250004

But the problem with that is he'd earlier claimed that not only no one
went into Cambodia, that no one came within 30 miles of the border:

<snip>

O'Neill: . . .everyone familiar with the entire operation series knows
that the PCF, the Swift Boat areas, stopped just north of Sa-Dec, some
50 miles from the border. The areas further north were PBRs--smaller
boats--and that the border was heavily guarded to ensure that nobody
could go across it.

(Interviewer): There were navy gunboats anchored in the Mekong River
Channel, through which a Swift Boat would have to pass.

O' NEILL: Yes. It would have been apprehended 30 miles before. But
were placed there because in 1967 some drunken Army guys actually
went up that river and were interned in Cambodia. And so to avoid future
incidents, those gunboats were placed there. And we checked with the c
ommander of those gunboats, whose name is Tom Anderson. He's also in the book.

14. Nixon Tapes...The Gift That Keeps On Giving...
Stupid morons didn't bother to check O'Neill's closet thoroughly. Rove probably knew about the Colson connection (they ignore it) but forgot about the tapes that all but shows this head scum has purjured himself. Oops!

Kudos to the other DU'er who used that line the other day.
