McCain struggles with sensitive abortion question

January 2000

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain, when asked Wednesday what he would do if his 15-year-old daughter Meghan became pregnant and wanted an abortion, said it would be a "family decision."

"The final decision would be made by Meghan with our advice and counsel," McCain said, speaking of himself and his wife Cindy.

"I would discuss this issue with Cindy and Meghan, and this would be a private decision that we would share within our family and not with anyone else," McCain told reporters in New Hampshire on board his campaign bus nicknamed "The Straight Talk Express. "Obviously I would encourage her to bring, to know that baby would be brought up in a warm and loving family, but the final decision would be made by Meghan with our advice and counsel."

It is amazing what the fear of the religious right has done to this country.

1. Flip..... Flop
But tonight he said he has *always* been pro-life.

What he said in 2000 sure sounds like pro-choice to me.

3. In the article he called himself pro-life....but not if it were his daughter.
Things change when it is personal, I guess.

4. It is amazing what the fear of the religious right has done to this country.
If the politicians wouldnt get away with changing their positions the religious right would lose their influence.

Our candidates (and 527 groups) needs to hit the airwaves pointing out the hypocrisy of all Republicans (especially their nominee) who thinks they can play both sides of an issue just to get elected.

5. I KNEW I heard him say "somewhere" that he was NOT a
PRO LIFE fundie candidate! I didn't remember when or where I heard it, but I knew I heard it!
Thanks for posting this. I sure hope KO or someone in the MSM picks up on this! I LOVE throwing an ax into his "I've always been" statements! I guess the next thing we'll hear is that he's always been a RW evangelical supporter too!
