Huck compares McCain to Dole
sure, it's not exactly scathing, and my eyes burn a bit from reading a Hannity transcript, but the more McCain comparisons to Dole the better!

Huck compares McCain to Dole

Mike Huckabee, speaking a bit more freely in his new capacity as a Fox News contributor, used a "Hannity & Colmes" appearance last night to offer a candid assessment of McCain's performance last week.

Huck used two words that dare not speak their name in McCainworld: "Dole" and "anger:"

ESTRICH: He went to a German restaurant that didn't go very well. He had the time at the cheese counter at the grocery store. I mean, I have to tell you, if I were John McCain I would be glad I didn't get a lot of press last week.

What is wrong with the McCain campaign?

HUCKABEE: Well, I think he missed an opportunity. Instead of having some fun with it and showing sort of a buoyant 'hey, do what you've got to do, let Obama go play basketball, I'm solving problems.' Do it with tongue and cheek.

Frankly, I thought he looked more like Bob Dole in the last days of the 1996 campaign saying 'look at the record, look at the record,' and there was some anger and sense of frustration there.

He shouldn't show that. He needs to show that nothing is getting to him, it's rolling off his back, and I think he missed an opportunity to do that last week.

1. Truth be told, I feel Huck would have been the most dangerous republican they could have nominated
Yes he's hard to the right and religious nut, but he would unite the base and he has a kind of sense of humor that I think would have played well and detracted some from his actual stands. I'm actually kind of surprisesd that McCain hasn't focused on him as a potential VP. He would be more formidable than Romney.

6. Huck would alienate enough of the base to make him a liability
The FReepers hate Huckabee because as much as he's to the right on a lot of issues he takes on a populist slant when it comes to the economy which basically makes him a socialist in the Freep's world view.

I've seen more support for Fred Thompson as VP than I've seen for Huckabee at FR.

8. Nah--as a complement to McCain, Huck's toothless.
He'd just scare anyone away who wasn't a fundamentalist Christian or a gun nut--all independent voters would have to do is hear that quote about editing the Constitution to fit "God's standards" to send them running for the hills.

3. What a Disappointment
Your subject line threw me. I was psyched up for something like

"YOU don't know about McCain without you have read a book by the name of McCain: The Myth of a Maverick; but that ain't no matter. That book was made by Mr. Matt Welch, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. Course, Mr. Welch didn't say McCain was like Old Dole. I said that my own self, and I reckon it's true enough. If it ain't, that is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary."

You know ... something along those lines.

4. the subject line was disappointing to me too when I saw it on Politico
That's why I added the little preface that it wasn't exactly scathing. Sorrrry.

7. No *I'm* Sorry
Your preface is fine.

I was just making a dumb little joke to the effect that if I had my druthers I'd rather know what Mr. Finn has to say -- about anything! -- than having to think about Arkansas' former governor. An infinitely better Huck, you know.

5. Well Huck me sideways.
This "truth-telling" thing is something Republicans aren't real good at. In any case, he highlighted an important point--in going to Europe and talking to all those world leaders, Obama got under McCain's skin...whether Gramps will admit it or not, his campaign's rhetoric and actions have betrayed a hint of irritation and frustration.
