McCain Clarifies Position on Gay Adoption
July 27, 2008 11:12 AM

ABC News' Mary Bruce reports: Sen. John McCain put rumors of a flip flop to rest this weekend, discussing his opposition to gay adoption in an exclusive "This Week" interview with George Stephanopoulos.

“My position is: It’s not the reason why I’m running for president of the United States; I’m running for president of the United States because I want to help with family values. And I think that family values are important, when we have two-parent-- families that are of parents that are the traditional family,” McCain said.

McCain told The New York Times earlier this month that he flatly opposed gay adoption, even in cases where children couldn't find another home -- but his campaign later backtracked, claiming McCain would not support any federal legislation to ban gay couples from adopting.

While McCain made clear to Stephanopoulos that "I am for the values that two-parent families, the traditional family, represents," he also highlighted the role of the states: "Many of these decisions are made by the states, as we all know," he said.

When pressed further about children who may not have a home otherwise, McCain, who has an adopted daughter, reiterated that he will "do everything I can to encourage adoption, to encourage all of the things that keeps families together, including educational opportunities, including a better economy, job creation."

1. " rumors of a flip flop to rest " . Whatever, he tried to pander to conservatives and his campaign
back tracked. Oh well, at least ABC mentioned his affirmative action flip flop on their site .

2. He's still a giant fucking hypocritical bigot.
McCain, who made his 1st wife a single mother when he left her to marry his mistress.

3. I thought his comments on that subject were pretty bizarre and cowardly.
Since when does "two parent family" exclude two gay parents?

4. You know, he might just have answered the damn question.
"Children need love. Let's support the idea of a society that provides it to them."

5. You didn't answer the question.
So he's for two parent families? WTF does he think a gay couple are? This man's evasiveness and indecisiveness on every single goddamned issue is starting to really annoy me. The man has no ethics, no "values", no intelligence and has absolutely NOTHING to add to the National dialogue. You'd think someone who went to Vietnam, crashed 5 planes, was captured by the enemy and was able to withstand torture for 5 years would have an iota of character and principles. What a fucking disappointment. McCain is a usless, pathetic, white blob.

6. I have never understood bastards who say it is best to have
a 2 parent household with a mom and dad. If that can't be found, it is better to have no parents and be raised in foster care. When they say they are against gay adoption for the first reason, they are implying the second reason as well. As a gay man who is adopting 4 teens from foster care, I say they are all bastards.

7. "...two-parent families, the traditional family..."

McCain is such a tool. First off there are plenty of people who prefer being single and are a good parent. There are people in non-traditional family situations that make good parents. And, conversely, there are plenty of traditional, two-parent families who make horrible parents. I mean, even the law recognizes that child placements should be made on the basis of what's in the best interests of the child.

Personally, I believe that it is in the best interest of the child to be adopted by a loving parent. Two parents would be great but one will suffice. It is in the child's best interest to have the security of a home with people who love them than to be under state control. It is also in the child's best interest to have a parent or parents who want to provide a good life for the child, regardless of their sexuality, age or gender.
