McCain's rejected OP-ED says Iraq should have an air force

Senator Obama is also misleading on the Iraqi military's readiness. The Iraqi Army will be equipped and trained by the middle of next year, but this does not, as Senator Obama suggests, mean that they will then be ready to secure their country without a good deal of help. The Iraqi Air Force, for one, still lags behind, and no modern army can operate without air cover. The Iraqis are also still learning how to conduct planning, logistics, command and control, communications, and other complicated functions needed to support frontline troops.

Now I'm not exactly sure, but did Iraq have a working air force of any sort after the Gulf War??? I believe it was almost non-existant for most of the 90s. If so, AND if Saddam was such a large threat in 2003 that he needed to be overthrown even thou he had no air force worth a damn, WHY does Iraq need an air force now???

While we are at it, why is it taking so long to train the Iraqi military when 5 years ago it was such a threat? Did everyone in Iraq forget how to shoot a gun? Also, who exactly is going to be attacking Iraq where they need this military so badly??? If you say it is Iran, then please tell us, when was the last time the Iranian army ever attacked another nation???
