McCain gets Prissy to Reporters about the "rape joke supporter"

Three days after rescheduling a fundraiser that had been planned at the home of a supporter who joked about rape, Republican presidential candidate John McCain continues to face questions about why he is keeping the $300,000 raised by Texas oilman Clayton Williams.

At a press conference in Arlington, Virginia, CNN’s Dana Bash asked McCain why his staff had even scheduled a fundraiser with Williams, who in 1990 joked that rape was like bad weather: “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”

The question visibly agitated McCain. He furrowed his brow, fidgeted with his notes, blinked rapidly, scowled, squinted, scoffed and grimaced as Bash was completing her question.

Finally he said, “my people were not aware of a statement he made 16 or 18 years ago. I’ve forgotten how many years ago it was.”

McCain defended the decision to keep the money Williams raised, after Democrats hit him on the decision earlier in the day.

“The people that contributed are supporters of mine, not supporters of his, so when we found out that this was planned there, we said, ‘No, we’ll reschedule it, and do it some place else,’ and I understand that he’s not attending,” McCain said. “I don’t, that’s pretty much the sum of it all.”

how many years ago it was."

So, his "people" DID know about it? That statement makes it appear that they did...

Edit: I suck and c&p...

9. Okay - What About This Quote From Clayton Williams Re Prostitutes
This was reported in the Dallas Observer:

"In Texas, the proximity to legal brothels is considered as much a natural resource as oil. Clayton Williams summed up this blasé attitude during his gubernatorial campaign with a casual and costly admission of frequenting Mexican prostitutes in his youth. "It's part of growing up in West Texas," he told wide-eyed reporters. "It was a lot different then. The houses were the only place you got serviced. It was kind of what the boys did at A&M."

I guess it was hard to find a date when you kept referring to it as being "serviced".

7. I love the fact that Claytie Williams is still political poison 18 years later!
That one joke gave us four years of Ann Richards. Not a bad service to his state.

10. Hush your mouth!
Claytie is a Good Ole Boy! So what if he compared Ms. Richards to a cow? And that crack he made about her drinking, that was all in good fun. Why, if he had been governor, every third Friday would have been declared "Take your son to a Mexican hooker Day"!

Do I need a sarcasm smiley?

16. Ask any politically aware person in the entire state of TX about Clayton Williams....
and we will all be able to tell you his disgusting joke and how it sank his political career. Republicans can't stand him because of his statement and the implications of it.

Certainly McBush and his "people" know ONE person in TX to ask about these things. Either they didn't care to do their homework, or someone conveniently forgot to mention this information in order to embarrass McBush. Being associated with Clayton Williams at the time when McBush is attempting to sway Clinton supporters and independent female voters? Really??

The timing is suspect...and funny. Very VERY funny! If I were stupid enough to be his campaign manager, I'd be out for blood right now.

21. I loves me some McCain bashing
But I think this attack is pretty weak and petty.

The dude in question is clearly a tool but he is also just a donor. McCain isn't endorsing his statements. I think we are gong down a really stupid path with this stuff. How many highly competent people have been forced out of the obama camp now over stupid shit like this. People are not perfect they say stupid shit sometimes throwing away competency over remarks made 16-18 years ago will leave a wide swath of destruction if it is allowed to continue. I am not saying the guy who said the remarks being discussed here is competent only that we are getting a little to pc for my tastes this election. Stephanie powers was a big loss to the obama campaign over one silly comment. Some how the all pc all the time crap needs to go.
