Collin Powell tells B.C. crowd he might vote for Obama
Talk about being dis-illusioned with your party...bad for them good for us.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20080613.BCPOWELL13/TPStory/National

VANCOUVER -- Colin Powell, the former Republican secretary of state, says he is not ruling out a vote for Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee for president.

While Mr. Powell served in the administrations of two Republican presidents, he suggested yesterday his support for presumed Republican nominee John McCain is not a forgone conclusion.

He noted that although both he and Mr. Obama are black, he would not cast a vote for the Illinois senator on the basis of race. "I will vote for the individual I think that brings the best set of tools to the problems of 21st-century America and the 21st-century world regardless of party, regardless of anything else other than the most qualified candidate," Mr. Powell said at a news conference before delivering a speech to about 800 people attending a leadership forum at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

"Both of them certainly have the qualifications to be the president of the United States, but both of them cannot be," he said.

6. Heh- no way does he want that
Besides, I think his wife would leave him if he did.

I think Powell was a decent man who allowed himself to be manipulated by some pretty bad characters. It doesn't excuse the actions, but I don't have the same hatred I have for bush-cheney-rice-rummy-etc.

We have plenty of good Dems to fill the VP spot.

8. I've heard it said that Powell doesn't want the #2 job because
his wife has had a problem with alcohol and he doesn't want to put her under the microscope that is a presidential campaign.

It has also been said that his wife didn't want him to run for President because she was scared some white power wacko would try and kill him.

I think Powell is happy to be out of political life and doesn't want back in.

17. That was not his fault.
As a part of Bush administration he had to trust the head of CIA and they approved the speech.

23. Bullshit. He knew who he was dealing with. He knew they wanted war badly, at any cost.
If he wants to atone for it, fine. I can forgive, if he's willing to make amends and work toward actual solutions for stabilizing Iraq and getting us out of there. But this poor little soldier boy excuse doesn't wash. He was the Secretary of State and just about the only sane man in the cabinet. He's responsible for what he said and he shares the responsibility for what they all did to Iraq and to our Bill of Rights.

If I could figure out the war was based on lies, he could too. I'll forgive him when he apologizes and starts to clean up the mess he helped make.

25. He's got more than that to atone for.
First, his whole association with Bushco. If he's as decent as everyone says, then he had no business hanging out with that crowd - and giving credibility to the whole 2000 election fiasco, too, by allowing himself to hang out with the rest of the cabinet-in-waiting at the Lazy W. He also, IMO, is responsible for Clinton's not being able to enforce gays serving openly in the military. He said that it wouldn't work and he didn't want to enforce it. So Clinton backed off (I wish he hadn't) and the policy he did enact didn't work, and he got lasting scorn for it.

Powell also stood to do quite well with the loosening of media regulation that his son tried to push through at the FCC - he had a gob of AOL/Time Warner stock.

His career started with doing an apologia for the My Lai massacre in Vietnam, too.

Obama had said he would consider having Powell in his administration and I just about barfed. How this guy gets away with being considered nice, with all the harm he has caused, is beyond me.

5. Whether he votes for Obama or not, Powell should still be investigated...
He was complicit in the hype that the Bush administration used to talk up the invasion of Iraq. He may be having a moment of clarity, but he still needs to answer a few questions before a Congressional committee as far as I'm concerned.

7. I hope Obama will not allow himself to be tainted by Powell's stain!
Powell is a war criminal, or at the very least, an willing accomplice to starting an unjust war.

9. Colin Powell is part of the problem...
I hope Obama doesn't look to him for advice. How culd anyone forget how he lied us into war? It was his presentation that was the most convincing reason many people supported Bush's lies...

18. I think its important he fully confronts his U.N. speech before going back in government...
From watching a couple of "Frontline" shows it seems like powell was always having to push back against almost everyone else around bush wanting war. but did he do enough? He seems like a man who would have gotten a lot done diplomatically had he served under someone like say clinton.

19. Is there video of this? Can someone find it?
Because a video featuring Colin Powerll saying that Obama has the qualifications to be president of the United States would look great featured in a campaign ad for Obama.

20. ya know after
the rethugs set him up to be hung out to dry. Seeing to it he would not ever be viable as one of their candidates. Imagine how their heads would explode if Powell were selected as Obamas VP or even just invited into the Democratic party...

A cabinet position for Powell would be viable as he is not a "YES" man. (as why he was dismissed from bushey boys Cabinet)

truth is if the rethugs inherent racism had not thrown Powell under the bus he would be a formidable Opponent to Obama.

Just pondering here so dont go freaking out.

Logic admits Powell is to be respected as much as Clark.
