I get tired of people claiming all Kerry runs on is his vet record
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 01:09 PM by noahmijo
Nobody from the left or from here certainly says this, but for instance last week when I was debating with someone who completely bought the smearboat vets for lies ad, he was claiming that Kerry has spent millions building up his vet record over his career and that is ALL he has run on since he entered politics.

He also said it was a lie that he saved Rassaman's life.

Believe it or not after about 15 minutes I now have this person on the fence as opposed to being strongly anti-Kerry

However, what I couldn't get into (since the guy was changing the subject to healthcare after I was just about hit it home on the issue of Kerry's political career) just what exactly Kerry has really built his career on.

I would mention his environmental record, but repukes or repuke leaning don't care about that so it's not a worthy talking point with them in my opinion.

To my knowledge he and McCain worked tirelessly to help locate and bring home MIA's from Vietnam, (swifties don't seem to mention this fact) he put away the 2nd most notorious mob boss in Boston or was instrumental in doing so, he has fought tirelessly for funding for the police and has always had their backs (when they were in the right of course) he worked for women's rights and for laws that gave extra punishment to rapists.

Then of course the Iran-Contra scandal and his role in that.

What am I missing? I mean jeez this record alone should be enough to impress a "conservative" who claims to support this nation and those who help enforce the laws and defend it.

But nope liberals hate America, hate all police, hate the flag, spit on you, think we should let the terrorists win......(meantime in the background it seems as though repugs got no problem setting up trade deals with terrorists and dictators)

2. He crafted the legislation that put 100,000 more cops on the streets
Clinton signed it.

He and Kennedy crafted the CHIPS bill which extended health coverage to kids in every state. Ironically, when Bush was running in 2000, he took credit for the extended CHIPS coverage in Texas, even though he fought against the bill himself.

3. He spent years as a prosecutor, hit them with the "law and order"
angle. Not that the repuke hierarchy believe in law or order for themselves, but that's supposedly a repuke tenet.

4. Small Business
Most things that were done for Small Business between 1996 and 2003 went through Kerry. He was the chair of the Small Business Committee and he had to steer legislation through the committee to get it enacted.

Here's a flyer with some of the legislation he introduced or supported.

5. Fiscal responsibility
Broke with many party loyalists by supporting balanced budgets and welfare reform because it was the fiscally responsible thing to do.

6. I am really tired of hearing about Vietnam. That is not
meant as a slight against those that fought there as I do appreciate their service but this is 2004 and I do want to hear about things that are relevant to this point in time and beyond.
