Canvassing Report/Swing the Vote/Swanzey, NH
Another day of canvassing. This time in Swanzey, NH. As i've posted before, the Dems lost NH's 4 electoral votes by 7,200 votes. There were 23,000 eligible voters in Cheshire County who did not vote in 2000. Swing the Vote has targeted this county because we think we can make a real difference this time.

Swanzey has a population of 6,800. It is a sprawling town of 44 square miles. 98% of the population is white. 20% are college educated. The median household income is $45,000 (US is $42,000). The per capita income is $20,000 (US is $21,000).

Today, I talked to about 50 people and it was a Kerry love-in. Only about 10 people were planning to vote for Bush. The main issues of concern were the Iraq War and the economy. We found about a dozen people who were not registered but who wanted to vote for Kerry so we gave them the info they needed to register and put them on the "call-back"list.

One woman told us that her main issue was getting someone in the WH "with a decent IQ". Another woman said that George Bush "was a psychopath". One Bush guy said that Clinton and "those democrats" were all "commies" and that they would have to kill him to get his guns.

Very interesting...very hopeful! We'll be back in Swanzey next Sunday. :-)

1. I love these local stories
My last local story was that we threw a protest when Bush came to my well-to-do town. The motorists who responded passing by were overwhelmingly supportive. There were a lot who acted like they did not see us, but, so be it.

2. Poor guy
The Dems aren't going to take his guns away. He should be more concerned about the Repugs taking his guns away.
