Clinton on South Dakota Trail Hails McCain’s Travel to Iraq

Clinton on South Dakota Trail Hails McCain’s Travel to Iraq

In implicit jab at Obama, the New York Senator reminds voters twice that she has visited both Iraq and Afghanistan with McCain in the past.

McCain has criticized Obama this week for traveling to Iraq just once, even agreed to accompany him on a trip there.

Clinton Recalls Her Trips With McCain to Conflict Zones

Matt Phillips reports from Madison, S.D., on the presidential race.

During one of those candidate-drops-into-a-diner-for-a-chat rituals in eastern South Dakota today, Sen. Hillary Clinton took an indirect jab at Democratic front-runner Sen. Barack Obama.

In recent days, Obama has been fending off attacks from Sen. John McCain, the likely Republican nominee, about his paucity of visits to Iraq. The Illinois senator made his first trip to Iraq in January 2006, and now says he is considering a second.

McCain, who has visited Iraq eight times, has used the issue to criticize Obama’s foreign policy credentials. Obama, he says, “does not have the knowledge or the experience to make the judgments. Presidents have to listen and learn. Presidents have to make judgments no matter how popular or unpopular they may be.”

In her campaign stops, Clinton customarily pauses to praise McCain for his service to the country before going on to criticize his policy positions and cast them as a continuation of the Bush administration. But as she campaigns in South Dakota in advance of its Tuesday primary, Clinton added an extra recollection to her intro. “I have the highest respect and regard for Sen. McCain, he and I have actually gone to Iraq and Afghanistan together,” she said. “And I honor his service to our country and his patriotism.”

At her second stop of the day, she again reminded the audience of her journeys to conflict zones with the Arizona senator. As for her thoughts on Obama, Clinton continued on her current course — saying nothing.

6. Personally, I wish he wouldn't go over there. I just don't like the idea and
those like Clinton trying to push him to go. He is not going to find anything out he doesn't already know. Clinton and McCain didn't learn anything out other than the dog and pony shown put on. Remember McCain's hardhad walking tour in the market.

He doesn't need to go.

10. You are to blame for Senator Obama not going to Iraq because you will not drop out!
Nothing has changed in the past two months. Had Senator Clinton dropped out for the party, Obama could have made his foreign travels as he had always planned to do.

14. I hate it when the media mentions that he said he may be going there acting like McCain pushed him
into it when he has been planning on doing this since March but couldn't because Clinton would never drop out. She has also succeeded in raising his negatives and making sure a larger percentage of her supporters feel alienated from Obama. Good job, Hillary. McBush thanks you.

16. The thing I do not get about Hillary supporters
is why in God's name they think THEY are different. She would throw her grandma in a wheelchair under the bus-why do you think she will fight for YOU? Oh yeah just because she says so. She will throw gays, women's rights ANYTHING away for a vote. I trust her LESS than McCain though certainly I would vote for her over McCain. But good lord, it's like Scotty McClellan trusting his boss-you TRUST her WHY? Loyalty. Well she has none for you, but you think she does.

20. The Australian journalist in Iraq on CNN talked about what bullshit those PR tours are.
That they pretty much see the inside of the Green Zone and embassy, and not a picture of what's really going on in Iraq.

Thanks Hillary! The fitting for your pink tu-tu is at 2:00 P.M. tomorrow.
