Chuck Hagel Takes On McCain, Repeatedly Praises Obama
May 20, 2008 10:06 PM

Chuck Hagel is quickly becoming Barack Obama's answer to Joe Lieberman.

Hagel, speaking to a small gathering at the residence of the Italian ambassador, took umbrage with several positions taken by the McCain campaign, including the Arizona Senator's criticism of Obama for pledging to engage with Iran. Engagement is not, and should not be confused for, capitulation, he argued.

"I never understand how anyone in any realm of civilized discourse could sort through the big issues and challenges and threats and figure out how to deal with those without engaging in some way...."

Hagel then offered a wry tweak of his GOP colleague. "I am confident that if Obama is elected president that is the approach we will take. And my friend John McCain said some other things about that. We'll see, but in my opinion it has to be done. It is essential."

Hagel, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, went on to belittle the tendency for some within his own party to disparage those who tout diplomacy. "You take some risks in talking about this," he said, "especially in the Congress, because you can immediately be branded as an appeaser."

2. I think Hagel is so different from Lieberman - Lieberman is a panderer
Hagel is basically a conservative. He only differs from the GOP voting pattern
by opposing the war and supporting veterans.

He has taken alot of shit for opposing the war.

He has been bold and outspoken in his opposition.

Lieberman is weasely like.

5. Hagel's an alright dude. He's basically an old-school fiscally conservative/socially liberal pol
Frankly, we could use more people like him on both sides of the aisle.

8. Lieberman does not represent the interests of Americans
He represents the interests of Israel well. I have nothing against Israel but our Senators and Representatives should represent our interests. He represents the interests of certain elements of the military industrial complex well ... you get my point.

Lieberman is dreck. Chuck Hagel, on the other hand, is an honorable guy I disagree with on certain issues, like a woman's right to govern her reproductive processes.

One last point. Weasels everywhere are offended by your comments relating them to Lieberman: "Lieberman is weasely like." Don't mess with the weasels, man.

Republican to Democratic. He doesn't differ from many of us on the issues; ie: opposing the Iraq war, keeping the enemy close, and a host of other issues.

10. Marine combat officer in Vietnam Hagel, or know-nothing war freak Joe Lieberman
Hmmm. Let me think on this one...

Needless to say, the crazies on this board hate Hagel because he owned a piece of some electronic voting company, or some such nonsense, as if the guy ever needed to rig a vote to win an election in fucking Nebraska. Sometimes, our own are dumber than the opposition.

11. Well, Army Sergeant--not Marine officer. But I agree with you, he didn't
need to "steal" his elections. And no one in NE thinks he did. It is indeed an insult to equate him with Lieberman, IMO.
