Obama's big Portland rally was preceded by popular rock band.
Edited on Wed May-21-08 07:23 AM by Perry Logan
Obama's record-breaking rally in Portland may have something to do with the popular rock band that preceded him:

From CNN to the New York Times, the media hyped Barack Obama's Portland, Oregon rally on Sunday, some comparing him to a rock star.

Unmentioned in national reporting was the fact that Obama was preceded by a rare, 45-minute free concert by actual rock stars The Decemberists. The Portland-based band has drawn rave reviews from Rolling Stone magazine, which gave their 2005 album Picaresque four and a half stars (out of five), and another four and a half stars for 2007's The Crane Wife.

How many of the people showed up to hear Obama, and how many to hear the band?

...There's nothing wrong with a candidate using celebrity power to draw a crowd, but the media have a responsibility to report their presence. By ignoring the free concert, the Times and other outlets made it appear that 75,000 people were drawn only by Sen. Obama's considerable charisma.

100. The OP didn't say the crowd "only" came for the concert. But not mentioning the concert at all
shows the pro-Obama media bias.

See my reply below, #87.

The Decemberists have drawn over 10,000 people for a free outdoor concert in Chicago.

A Christian music festival at that park in Portland drew 140,000 people in two evenings, on days when there'd been drenching rain before the concerts started.

And the MSM managed somehow to leave out all mention of the free concert, or comparable crowds drawn for free music in that park.

I'm sure most people were there for Obama. But it was dishonest for the media to report the event as though there was no other reason for that many people to show up.

I don't believe the media would have failed to mention a free concert, or the attendance for other free concerts in a park, if the story had been about Hillary Clinton.

41. Right - Obama was the main attraction
If the OP's theory was true, everyone would ditch the venue after said popular band finished their performance. Also, the band obviously supports Obama - the must be rockin' - I bet they stayed for the speech too.

That's why he chose them. He is such a mastermind at tricking people! They were all hyped about Obama by the Decemberists, and then he came out on stage, and they were probably just too lazy to leave, so decided to stay and applaud, and shout "Yes we can!" in protest. Shame on you Barack Obama!

Uhm, and who are the Decemberists, do they have any other #1 hits besides Obama in the top 5? I don't think I've heard of them. How embarrassing. :P

Oh that is a laugh...the Decemberists sold a total of 6,737 records in Portland on their "critically acclaimed" release Picaresque (figures via nielsen soundscan). If you know anything about the music business you'd know that if you are lucky, based on your sales base, you can sell about 10%-20% in tickets, let's say they get 50% of their fans out...thats a total draw of 3,369 out of 75,000...yup so a whopping 4% of his crowd that day might have been there only to see the band.

However the band draws from a base of younger, hipper, folks who most likely already support Senator Obama.

Good luck with Decemberists-gate tho.

Anyone who thinks a group like the Decemberists could draw a crowd like this has some kind of wierd thinking going on. It won't make anymore difference to anyone than a grain of sand tossed into the ocean.

Obama is the nominee, Obama will be the one running in the GE, and people like this poster can keep on doing these kind of posts, but it is largely irrelevant at this point. I say soldier on if it makes the transition period easier for them.

For some reason, this OP's series of Custer's last stand posts to me are more sad and amusing in a dark way, than anything else. Like the manipulative and deceitful things that Hillary is doing in these last days especially to fake out supporters in order for them to keep sending those checks and money orders. It isn't illegal, just unethical, but that is her style.

I bet this was the first time you've actually even heard of the Decemberists. They don't draw crowds of that size, typically. And Even if people came to see them, they sure did stick around to hear Barack speak...

The Decemberists are good for 1500 tickets in Portland. THAT'S IT - and that is a fact...I gave you Portland soundscan, I gave you the last venue they headlined in portland, and gave you the capacity of that venue.

Keep reaching but this is just ridiculous.

87. Decemberists' free Chicago concert 10,000+; Christian music in Waterfront Park 140,000
Edited on Wed May-21-08 08:40 AM by highplainsdem
Link to a web page about the Decemberists drawing more than 10,000 people to a free concert in Chicago last summer:

http://chicagoist.com/2007/07/19/the_decemberist.php

And a web page about a Christian music festival offering free concerts at Waterfront Park in Portland drawing over 140,000 people in two evenings in 2000:

http://www.meyersound.com/news/2000/portland_festival/

And that was on a rainy weekend, though the rain stopped just before the concerts started.

I'm not suggesting the free concert drew most of Obama's crowd.

But if you have a free concert by a local band able to draw over 10,000 people to a free concert in a city where they aren't local favorites -- and if you have perfect weather for a free concert in a park where 140,000 people will show up for free music in fairly bad weather -- then the media SHOULD have mentioned those factors.

And would have, if Hillary Clinton had drawn a huge crowd at that park with a rock group opening for her.

The fact the MSM said nothing about the free concert, or about how many people have shown up for free concerts at Waterfront Park in the past, shows the pro-Obama media bias that FAIR had noticed already early last year:

http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=3094

Anyone here really think that Olbermann and Matthews and the other Hillary-haters in the media would have failed to mention a rock group opening for Hillary Clinton, in a park that's drawn comparable crowds for a Christian music festival even in rainy weather?

84. They're doing well, but no way do they bring that crowd
They play venues that hold a couple of thousand people or less. Larger audiences are at festivals but they don't headline the big fests. They do have a label, which not everyone who plays on the circuit with them does. My son's band is about one tier below them and has played at some of the same venues. Even free, 75,000 are not showing up for them.

150. Yeah right, I waited 5 hours to see the Decemberists...
And I couldn't even see them. It was uphill to the band's stage and I could only see the head of somebody if I jumped. And I was quite close.

I had no idea they would be playing until I got there, and I assure you 100% of the people there came to see the next President of the United States.

155. I seen it reported on CNN..

Is that not reporting it? They did a whole story on how risky it was for Obama to do.
John Kerry had Bon Jovi play in that same spot and he had 50,000 people there. It's a good move.
