I know this "prayers are with you" stuff is usually just ceremonial, but maybe
there are a few righteous folk who actually get their prayers heard.

16. Truly honest and self-aware. FREE from lies and dependencies of any kind.
Free from quid-pro-quo, free from the need for rewards, free from false gods, free from ignorance, free from fear, and yes, eventually, even free from the need to be "free".

19. Funny you don't suggest the Speaker of the House lead us all in prayer
Why not call on Nancy Pelosi to lead the House in Prayer on CSPAN?
At this time she holds a position of greater political power.

Perhaps she can introduce a bill for congress to all pray on national tv and
in their home states, just to fulfil your prayer request.

Because its an insane idea. Its a perversion of religion.

These are politicians, elected government officials - not religious leader.

Separation of Church and State protect the freedom of religion,
and protect us from having Kings and Queens who dictate their religion to us.

21. Is this really the time and place to argue the church/state thing?
Pray for Senator Kennedy, in whatever way you feel comfortable doing so. Or don't. But why criticize the way anybody else does?

And that's directed at both of you, from this recovered Baptist who would rather be in a sweatlodge than a church these days.

Vocal Christians are eaten for breakfast here on the DU. It's like waving a red flag in front of a bull.

Please consider reposting your prayer request to the Progressive Christians group instead.

Just a suggestion (from another Christian).

And if you would like to make it an ecumenical all-faiths prayer (which I think is the better idea) you can go to the spirituality forum.

another post by this same person made unattributed quotes to "some ppl" talking about Obama winning the "lazy African American" vote.

no Christian I know would never wanted to be associated with such a person.

no, this is fake concern. this is simply a lame attempt to try somehow find fault with Obama. I wouldn't even post on this thread except I know you are a decent person and I wouldn't want you to be taken in by this false piousness.

26. Please. I'm an atheist and this is a totally harmless expression of concern.
Prayer is bunk, no doubt, but if it makes these people feel better in their powerlessness to help Senator Kennedy, why would you stop them? DU is not a government institution; people can pray here. If they couldn't then that would be exclusionary.

29. A hint for effective atheism:
You get angry when people barge in on your life and start jabbering about God. You recognize that those people do not help their cause.

Now, how do you think people feel when they're talking to other religious people, and you barge in and start jabbering about how you don't believe in what they saying?

If you come across people talking about religion, just move along. Recognition in the enormous improbability (and logical superfluity) of God by no means requires you to be a cock.

32. Wait a damned minute
the OP is hoping that Obama will publicly pray for Ted Kennedy. You do not find this to be annoying in any way? For me it is telling him to pray to the Christian god to prove he is not a Islamic terrorist....

That is what I got from the post.

That it is a way to drag religion even deeper into our political system.

31. My thoughts
I hope that Obama does nothing of the sort.

I have seen religion as it wraps itself in our flag and it is ugly.

You want to pray?

Fine. Pray to your imaginary friend.

I would be more tolerant of your religion if it wasn't responsible for keeping a bunch of crooks in the WH.

Also, the thing in your OP, about a few righteous folk having their prayers heard? That is delusional.
