57. I should point out that
Childers publically came out and distanced himself from Obama, said he had not recieved an endorsement from Obama.

Just a point.

And this is not that extraordinary. North Mississippi remains one party Democratic at the county level, it is a cabal from that part of the state that runs the legislature, and since Reconstruction, as far as I know, it's had one Republican representing it, Wicker.

So essentially, this was the Mississippi Democratic Party, running a courthouse ring candidate, winning a Congressional race that was only held by the Republican because Mississippi has a tendency of re-electing you indefinitely once you've won your first re-election (Pork, and this is a common trait in most southern states)

This was a race that turned entirely on geography and Childers had the better geography. It is a win though. Don't expect this part of Mississippi to be voting for Musgrove in the fall, because they'd love nothing more than to have two of their own in the U.S. Senate. The U.S. Senate race is going to be fought in everything that is south of Pontotoc. We should win it, because it is a terrible political faux pas in this state to have two U.S. Senators from the same damned town, which they are. Wicker won't play well on the coast, even as he does pander. The senate seat is more Musgrove's to lose, because geography is on his side

60. Musgrove is way conservative, but he's probably the best MS has to offer.
Like Arkansas, I think we have to take what we can get. I'm nervous, given Wicker is the incumbent and MS (and pretty much most southern states, I think) like to re-elect the incumbents. However, my fundie family in Jackson just adores Musgrove and think he was a fantastic governor.

I don't know. I hope we can win the seat, but I'm not counting on it.

61. That's the point, he's an economic Democrat
You don't win in Mississippi by running social liberals. This state, like most of the South, leans to the left on economics, to the right on social issues, and this is reflected in the Mississippi legislature, and in Childers himself.

All Musgrove has to do is paint this as him running against Pontotoc. Thad Cochran is our elder statesman. People actually refuse to run against him out of respect. He's still from Pontotoc, and so is Wicker. Musgrove will do very well in every part of the state that is not Pontotoc because there is a feeling in MS that this particular part of the state maintains an unfair hammerlock on everything in it. There are actually good reasons to believe that too.

It's a war of geography, and given that there is not a single thing that Musgrove is liberal on, there is nothing, nothing at all, with which Wicker can attack him on. His appointment, geographically, just makes no sense, no sense at all, because there is always one senator who plays to either the coast or the delta (or a combination of the two) and one to that area around Tupelo.

There is simply no way Musgrove can lose it.....not with gas as high as it is when combined with who he is

Three Repug districts have gone "D" in recent special elections; the Repugs can't be looking forward to November very much right now!

Also, the Repugs' attempts to bring down the Democrats in these conservative districts (MS and LA) by trying them to the national party failed, which is more good news.

My favorite thus far...

"By picking a state house delegate, and then we promptly lost the house delegate seat to the democrats.

We’ll probably lose a republican seat in Virginia in november as well.

Nobody wants to be a republican anymore.

I’ve never seen a party self-destruct so quickly."
