Cue the Racism! Watch this board fill up with That as the Talking Point. But Whose you may ask..
Here it comes, the major talking point thats been slithering under the surface will rise like an Evil bastard child of Mankind today, and fill this board with Hate and great gnashing of the Teeth..

Just make sure you watch, pay attention to WHO brings it Up!!

I hate seeing this pushed, but some desperate people have no other options..

It will sicken many hearts today, a dark cloud comes..

1. Well, we need to figure out how to stop it. Right?
Obama and Michelle can't do it alone. There are enough people on this board that can surely come up with enough ideas to squelch this horrid rhetoric. If "they" can bring him down by spewing hate and lies, can't "we" come up with an effective message to refute the lies and change attitudes?

I can't believe there is that much hate left in the U.S.

3. I thought the best thing I'd ever seen on this subject
was a black sheriff in LA who upon hearing that the KKK were going to march urged Everyone NOT to come, at All..

With no one to fight them they'd look totally ridiculous.

Maybe the best thing to do here is to NOT Post or Argue with supposed or obvious Racism..

Let them OUT themselves and the thread DIE from lack of interest..

Post something positive elsewhere :)

I wonder how many people feel actual SHAME after they post.. you just PUSH that damn button and you've TRASHED another Human Being.. someone you KNOW in your heart does NOT get what you are saying.. it's too easy to post and then blow off your feelings about it..

If we had a Big DU Blowout PARTY we'd meet some of these people face to face, and that's when it HITS YOU, that these are REAL PEOPLE you are responding to, not some computer program there to piss you off :)

68. If we talked bout it, we'd probably find that
racism will not stand in the way when it comes down to it.
It comes down to whether having another Republican in the White House - who is said to be giving Bush a third term and who will set back our country more than Bush has already done - and whether it is worth it or not to a racist.

72. Agreed!
One thing I've learned is that Passion and Logic don't exist in the same space.. when Passion kicks in the Logic goes out the window, and it's just Human nature, once you realize it in yourself you can work towards cooling down so you can use the Logic circuit..

Screaming at my broken car doesn't "fix it", I've got to cool off so I can use the part of my brain that says, "Well, THAT'S not the Problem, maybe THIS is.."

There's plenty of Passion Juice squirting all around here, just people being people, but I think deep in their heart of hearts, they really may "think" differently :)

5. If the Obama supporters hadn't started calling Clinton supporters racist,
before SC this would not be a problem. Just to good of a political tool for them to use as a club against a fellow Democrat to gain political power. I don't like it, but like they say about Clinton, he brought it on himself.

A Clinton supporter who will vote for Obama.

12. I didn't say that, but believe what you want.
It's his fault as a politician and the fault of some of his supporters. I hope he can heal this rift, but doubt he can without Clinton's help. I don't deny that their is racism in this country, but it's not coming from Clinton. I know you will never see it my way, but the willingness of some Obama supporters to call Clinton supporters racist not just on the internet and GDP, but in real life, is the cause of this split.

But she'll happily dogwhistle to racists using the "elitist" attack. It allows her and, apparently, many of her supporters to continue the "who me, racist?" façade.

The amount of nasty rolling out of your mouths probably wouldn't mean much if you sat down and had a beer or whatever.. You'd probably have more in common than you'd think, for one thing you BOTH want McCain OUT right?

My Uncle used to say, "A year from now you'll wonder why you wasted all that Adrenalin.."

So put your minds into the "year from now" mode Ahead of time, and get over it already :)

I think the OP is appealing to people of both sides not to fall into this trap today. I originally thought he was pointing a finger at Hillary supporters, but that could be because I my nerves when it comes to the topic are frayed. I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

What I believe he is saying is that alot of people are going to try and make today about race and that DU should ignore these threads and posters and not fall into the divisive trap people are attempting to herd us into.

Just my two cents hun :)

Do you understand how ridiculous a statement that is? Do you think that the civil rights movement of the 60's, that the people marching , being beaten, and being firehosed were "ignoring" the situation and that's why it got better?

The only way to eliminate racism is to expose it and fight it openly. Burying your head in the sand is not going to solve anything.

55. Your intentions are admirable...
The problem is that this is something that has been brewing under the surface of the U.S. for a long time... We have chosen a candidate who would have been forced to sit in the back of the bus in 1960, less than 50 years ago. Those people who turned the firehoses on the civil rights marchers and beat them with batons are still alive, and voting no less.

Like it or not, this is going to be a cancer of our society that will be exposed by his candidacy.. and some very difficult decisions and discussions are going to happen. I wish it would be as easy as simply not addressing the problem, but I'm afraid that is not going to solve it.

DU is not the only place that racism is going to be brought up as an issue. It will simply reflect the rest of the country.

Yeah, it may never go away, but I'm glad that since I was a kid there are more "Honey" colored people, and mixed marriages, etc.. I'm hoping that in the future if we ever get past this altogether, that the only color we'll be arguing about is the color of our shoes, whether they match or not. :)

Hate only grows when it is fed. Arguing against it feeds the beast and makes it grow larger. Arguing against it makes it appear worthy of debate, it is not. This isn't about merely ignoring racism, this is about keeping it from having a voice and keeping it from being fed. We need to treat it as the useless, childish, hateful thing it is. It's not worthy.

41. Outside of a few people I've known here for a while...
I'm doing the same thing. I just know things will change... fingers crossed.

I was joking with my b/f about "compliance gas" that is released just before we all wake up in the morning... as crazy as that sounds, I really can't think of a good explanation for what I'm seeing here.

33. Hide thread works great
And it keeps me from being tempted when I read stupid shit. I've been using it a lot lately. At the first sign of bigotry or hate of any kind against whomever, I hide the sick puppy. Life is too short to be reading the vile pukings of haters. There is too much positive work to be done. All this hate is divisive, and it shouldn't be fed.

23. It's laying the foundation to explain a big loss in WV and scare SDs into falling into line...
Do you think many SDs will want to come out for Clinton after a whopping 'racially' motivated win in WV?

Hell no, they won't want to be aligned with 'racists' who are voting against Obama as much as they are for Clinton. Thus, much of the commentary over the next few days will be dissecting and lamenting the white racists that will never support Obama by those who do.

The tactic is designed to prod those undecideds into supporting Obama for fear of being considered 'one of them.'

42. Don't let people BAIT YOU into stooping to their level
they may even be paid for it, don't give them the satisfaction..

I don't believe that Democrats are Racist, at least people on the DU, and so instead of letting some twisted people suck us all into the void, let's just NOT ANSWER THEM.

Make a cup of coffee, pet the cat, scroll to another thread.

NO Engagement.

WE are BETTER THAN THAT.

The brightest of shiny objects. A dismal state of affairs. I hate everybody today no matter what color they are or which candidate they support. I'm getting out of here for a few days. I'm just sick of it all.

Good luck with your effort :hi:

53. Yep
It can turn into a game of "Button, button, who's got the Button?" - Only the Button is NUCLEAR, and wastes us ALL..

People really ARE BETTER THAN THAT.. if we aren't then we're truely and royally fucked all down the line..

Let's try and get back together again as the primaries run out, and maybe just for an experiment we can pick ONE WORD/CONCEPT, and let it DIE OUT.

If we try, then we'll ALL be able to tell WHO the TROLLS ARE, Folks! :)

Edited on Tue May-13-08 11:33 AM by symbolman
let me ask you to do us all a favor..

Go into any thread that's oozing with racism, and tell people there to "NOT ENGAGE" on that thread.. let's not Scrap with each other for a while, on ONE Subject at least, something I think we can all agree on.. people of Both candidates..

If we do this, we'll boil down the soup to where we can see the bones (Trolls) and not ALL choke on them.. :)

Thanks if you will, maybe we can save a lot of respect and all go after the real enemy, which is the Media, whose job it is to Divide and Conquer us, by telling us things that pit us against each other.. and it works.. if we let it.

74. Your post isn't clear to me.
Are you referring to alleged racism/race baiting by the HRC campaign? or racism among the general populace as it affects the GE?

If the former, to me that issue is now irrelevant; we have our candidate.

If the latter, racism needs to be discussed as a real factor and not dismissed as a ploy to gain sympathy.

78. H2OMan's latest post is worthwhile
COME TOGETHER..

As Corny as some of the Beatle stuff may sound these days, there's one item they pushed that is still as valid, even more so..

And that is the Love Quotient.. "The Love you Take is Equal to the Love you MAKE.."

Or as One of my characters said in my book, "If we don't all start Loving each other, we're All going to DIE.."

There's an AA person there that's totally down about all the racism threads today, he makes a good case, check it out, each of us is hurt by the Racist bullshit flying around.. let's end SOME of the pain in this place, it's got to start somewhere..

:)

87. it was inevitable . . . the U.S. has hundreds of years of racist history . . .
and to expect all that to magically disappear because one of the presidential nominees is an attractive, intelligent, well-spoken black man is fantasy . . . and DU is just as diverse as the rest of America when it comes to how we were raised and what we were "carefully taught" . . . most of us hope we've overcome the worst of that training as we've matured, but it's still there, even if it's below the surface and unacknowledged . . .

both overtly and covertly, Obama's race will become an overriding issue of the 2008 campaign -- if it hasn't already . . . personally, I feel that the country has changed sufficiently that a black candidate can win the popular vote, and against someone like McCain probably by a significant margin . . . that doesn't, however, mean that the results will be tabulated that way by the Republican corporations that have taken control of our elections . . .

it's not who votes that counts; it's who counts the votes . . .
