McGovern on Larry King
Edited on Thu May-08-08 09:23 AM by Goodnevil
Did anyone see this last night? (stupid question). He pretty much said that the Democratic party lost it's bid for the White House in '72 because of in-fighting such as this. They lost it to Nixon in the middle of a war. Words of warning and wisdom.

1. I hope there is a link somewhere
I missed that, but I would love to hear what else he said. I think he's a pretty smart person.

2. Not really accurate
Maybe he is still trying to rationalize his loss, but at the time:
1) The war was winding down, with a continual stream of news articles about the peace talks that Kissinger and Le Duc Tho were having.
2) Nixon had high marks for foreign policy because of his trip to China.
3) The economy was going along well, so re-electing an incumbent was not a hard choice.
4) Watergate was still a third-rate burglary and didn't have the country's attention.

McGovern's problem was that he only energized the Gene McCarthy branch of the party and didn't go after all the people who voted for Johnson in '64.
