Clinton nabs SD Rep. Shuler

http://www.newsobserver.com/politics/story/1064123.html

U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler is pledging his support to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, according to a spokesman.

Shuler, a superdelegate to the National Democratic Convention, had said he would back the candidate who carried his 11th congressional district in Western North Carolina.

Clinton carried the district by 13 points in Tuesday's primary. Barack Obama carried the state.

Shuler,a former NFL quarterback, is serving his first term in Congress.

1. This was pretty much a given.
He'd made it pretty clear already.

He was good at Tennesee, although I loathe the SEC.

Private Dinner at Clinton's Home

Trying to win over those who are undecided, Clinton wined and dined 17 superdelegates this week at her posh Washington home.

At the dinner was Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., who had once endorsed former Sen John Edwards' presidential run, and represents a conservative district in western North Carolina.

He said he pointed out to Clinton that even with Edwards on the Democratic ticket in 2004, Bush-Cheney won his district with 60 percent of the vote.

How, Shuler asked Clinton, could she compete?

"I've been winning rural and swing districts all over the country," Clinton told him, according to sources at the dinner. Shuler remains uncommitted.

It means that she's staying in the race.

15. Dance Band On The Titanic by Harry Chapin
Dance band on the Titanic
Sing "Nearer, my God, to Thee"
The iceberg's on the starboard bow
Won't you dance with me

Mama stood cryin' at the dockside
Sayin' "Please son, don't take this trip"
I said "Mama, sweet Mama, don't you worry none"
"Even God couldn't sink this ship"

Well, the whistle blew and they turned the screws
It turned the water into foam
Destination sweet salvation
Goodbye home sweet home

I'm in the dance band on the Titanic
Sing "Nearer, my God, to Thee"
The iceberg's on the starboard bow
Won't you dance with me

There was a trombone and a saxophone
The bass and drums were cookin' up the bandstand
And I was strummin' in the middle with this dude on the fiddle
And we were three days out from land

And now the foghorn's jammed and moanin'
Hear it groanin' through the misty night
I heard the lookout shout down "There's icebergs around"
"But still everything's all right"

Oh, the dance band on the Titanic
Sing "Nearer, my God, to Thee"
The iceberg's on the starboard bow
Won't you dance with me

They were burnin' all the flares for candles
In the banquet they were throwin' in first class
And we were blowin' waltzes in the barroom
When the universe went CRASH!

"There's no way that this could happen"
I could hear the old captain curse
He ordered lifeboats away, that's when I heard the chaplain say
"Women and children and chaplains first"

Well, they soon used up all of the lifeboats
But there were a lot of us left on board
I heard the drummer sayin' "Boys, just keep playin'"
"Now we're doin' this gig for the Lord"

I heard the dance band on the Titanic
Sing "Nearer, my God, to Thee"
The iceberg's on the starboard bow
Won't you dance with me

There's a wild-eyed boy in the radio shack
He's the last remaining guest
He was tappin' in a Morse code frenzy
Tappin' "Please God, S.O.S."

Jesus Christ can walk on the water
But a music man will drown
They say that Nero fiddled while Rome burned up
Well, I was strummin' as the ship go down

I'm in the dance band on the Titanic
Sing "Nearer, my God, to Thee"
The iceberg's on the starboard bow
Won't you dance with me

Dance band on the Titanic
Sing "Nearer, my God, to Thee"
The iceberg's on the starboard bow
Won't you dance with me

Dance band on the Titanic
Sing "Nearer, my God, to Thee"
The iceberg's on the starboard bow
Won't you dance with me

17. Good for Hillary.....
Though I have to say that Shuler is my representative and he's a complete putz. Among other things, he's consistently voted in favor of Shrub FISA policies. COMPLETE putz. If his opponent in November weren't such a complete asshole (Mumpower), I might even consider voting against Shuler in Nov. Won't do it, but believe me, Shuler is not an impressive get. But it's a SD for her. She won't pick up many more though, I predict.

30. I'm not allowed to comment about MY representative?
I HAVE NOT engaged in bashing and have gone overboard to avoid rude Clinton supporters rather than respond to them and, if I couldn't join in posts supporting Clinton, at least not comment on the posts in a negative way -- I just walk on by. Shuler is MY representative and I reserve the right to say what I want about him. It had nothing to do with Clinton picking up a SD, it had everything to do with Shuler being a DINO asshole. (And he IS a DINO -- the Republicans in TN tried to recruit him to run there before he ran in NC.)

Edited on Wed May-07-08 11:44 AM by tpsbmam
and the results in his district (11). District 11 primary results: Obama 43.27%, Clinton 56.73% If he had any balls, he'd have endorsed before he saw the primary results.

I stick by what I said before: he's a complete DINO putz.

38. The way he votes, he's not quite another Lieberman, but he's close. So as
far as I'm concerned, it's a Democrat in name only district. Here is but a sampling of his voting record:

Firmly anti-choice.
Voted consistently to support Shrub's FISA policies and in favor of telecom immunity.
Voted against SCHIP reauthorization & expansion.
Voted against medical marijuana.
Voted against the Sexual Orientation Employment Nondiscrimination Act.
Voted against the establishment of the Office of Congressional Ethics.
Voted against the hate crimes prevention act.
Consistently votes against stem cell research.

Oh, but he did vote FOR recognition of the importance of Christmas and Christianity.

To be fair, he does have a better record in some areas (e.g., education.....though he doesn't vote for kids to be healthy AND go to school) and he's better than the incumbent he unseated, Charles Taylor, but that ain't saying a lot.
