Obama Needs To Change The Media Narrative- How Does He Do It? Please chime in.
Edited on Fri May-02-08 08:42 PM by cryingshame
Quite a few DU'ers posted on my thread yesterday that Obama can't really spar with Hillary or run ads countering her. Even if it's strictly policy.

Don't want Lazio-Effect to kick in so Hillary can play victim some more. Plus, he needs Hillary supporters later on in the GE.

So how to change the Narrative?

It seems to me that he needs to do SOMETHING. Perhaps a new policy proposal.

Any suggestions?

1. Tell the truth. One statement should be sufficient.

3. I think he should come out strong on Torture....
the fact the our President recently confirmed he knew about torture and approved it. that no one has stood up against this is a disgrace. It would help him against McCain, it would help show Americans the damage this administration has done to our reputation, and the fact that Hillary has all the Washington experience but hasn't come out strong against it.

5. He has a couple big announcements coming soon
his April fund raising numbers, his 1,000,000 phone calls, and his 1.5 million donors.

When he hits these and with a NC win, they will discuss how huge and grassroots and revolutionary his campaign is again.

7. Oh dear. We will discuss this but I don't think the Media will dwell on them. Not red-meat
enough.

6. With many polls showing majority of voters think Clinton is attacking him unfairly
I say use hard edged ads attacking Hillary's positions on various issues.

He needs to end this, its time to stop being the nice Democrat to her nasty Democrat, as it only helps her.

11. The Lazio-Effect only happened because he started the smears
And it was early in the campaign.

Obama is insulated to a large degree because everyone knows Hillary has been the only one running a negative campaign for the last two months.

No one would take her crocodile tears about being beaten on by a guy serious at this stage in the race.

Open government that TRUSTS the American CITIZEN with the truth and respects their duty as informed citizens enough to share it with them.

10. He should criticize McCain and Bush and explain what he would do differently.
Focus on the four or five key issues on which the Repubs. are out of touch with what Americans want and need at this point and drive home what he would do better.

It's ridiculous that the media continues to gossip about Wright but they have preferred gossip and praising McCain for months, so we should be used to it by now. If asked about this again, he should say he has dealt with the issue, and now he wants to talk about (pick the most relevant of the key issues and stick to that topic).

A combination short term and long term plan for dealing with gas prices would probably be a good choice for one key issue.

12. The only thing he can do
Is Win North Carolina and/or Indiana. That will give him control of the narrative once again.

If he loses both NC and Indiana, the story is all told on Hilary's terms from here on out. David Gergen came close to saying that if Obama loses both states on Tuesday he is done. Didn't quite go that far, but almost.

He who wins writes the story of his win. He who loses has his tale told by the winner.

15. gramps dissed farm subsides in iowa
no one is covering that are they...obama needs to run against john not hillary. he can change the narrative by pointing out what he is going to do and how he`s going to do it. he does`t need to respond to everything that is thrown at him by the media and clinton....he`s winning the delegates and popular vote, he`s signing up tens of thousands of new voters, raising millions from the people not big contributers ,and so far he`s only made one mistake in judgement on wright. he`s made his statement and he`s moved on and soon so will the american people who follow this stuff..

17. Obama needs to fight back with his own kitchen sink
He needs to go on the attack with something true AND tabloid friendly

for example, bring up the fact that Hillary was in India to promote outsourcing and when meeting with Indian business leaders told them, "I am delighted to be the Senator from Punjab."

the media doesn't care about 'boring' policy issues, which they totally ignore. so he needs to use something that sells to the MSM, something sensational and sound-bite friendly. also i notice that the media won't make it an issue unless the candidate does first, so it has to come directly from Obama himself. the media turned Wright into a big issue because HILLARY and MCCAIN brought it up first.

or how about bringing up the fact that Bill Clinton invited Rev. Wright to the WH and asked Wright to pray for him (shows her to be a hypocrite on the Wright issue), or how about mentioning the fact that Hillary has bankrupted her campaign and currently millions of dollars in debt?? He can also raise the issue of McCain's own crazy pastor who said katrina is God's will, Catholicism is the great whore, and so on

There is a shitload of dirt out there that Obama has failed to take advantage of so far.
BUT HE MUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT IF HE WANTS TO CHANGE THE ALL-IMPORTANT MEDIA NARRATIVE...ITS THE ONLY WAY!

and Obama would immediately get down on his knees to beg Tim's forgiveness.

the man is a spineless pansy, I'm afraid. to borrow Hillary's word.

22. Propose something bold and new to help people who are hard hit by fuel and food prices.
1) subsidies to mid-size and small trucking firms, diminishing over a few years, to cushion the effect of oil scarcity while the economy reorganizes around more sustainable principles and/or finds replacement energy sources. (This will help those on the lower income scale of the trucking industry and help keep prices in check for others)

2) increased incentives for local and organic agriculture.

3) increase the earned income tax credit slightly (to cover what a "gas tax holiday" would supposedly do for people) and make sure that food stamps and other assistance programs are FULLY funded so that everyone eligible can be accommodated AND that everyone who common sense says should be eligible, is eligible. (Assistance programs cover those who are left out of earned income tax credit by not having earned income.)

4) pay for it all by the savings of getting us out of Iraq, repealing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, and if necessary restoring progressivism to the tax structure (i.e. reinstate the estate tax and other taxes on the wealthy. Disclaimer: I'm not exactly poor. I don't mind paying taxes, I mind what they are being used for. Use them for the right things, I won't mind paying more.)
