Much like the Bush National Guard memo in 2004. This is CLASSIC Karl Rove.

Circulate evidence you know is fake and can be disproved. In 2004 it was the National Guard memo and now it's the Kantor video.

Then circulate information that proves it's fake and make your opponent look like he/she was circulating fake evidence.

Classic Rove. Obama better be careful because more is on the way. I never bought this whole Kantor thing in the first place because I knew it was bullshit.

2. While the Nat Guard example is the most famous, Rove did not invent nor perfect this.
In 2002, Gray Davis (incumbent Democrat) ran against Bill Jones (republican) for governor.

During the GOP primary, Davis with a huge warchest (2002 would be the most expensive governor's race to date) ran ads against Jone's competitor in the GOP primary (the mayor of LA who was fairly popular in CA and considered a moderate Republican) to help ensure Jones was their nominee. During the campaign Jones floundered mostly behind 5 to 10 points. This even though Gray Davis was hardly a popular governor (indeed he would get recalled just 1 year later in a GOP switcheroo). Then Jones was seemingly handed a gift. He was endorsed by the COPS organization. Someone in that group passed along a photo to Jones's campaign that appeared to be showing Davis accepting campaign donations in his official governor's office which was a big ethical breach. So Jones calls a press conference ans seemingly has the governor is a bad spot. BUT! But upon further analysis it is realized that the photo is not of the governor's office or the state house and nothing unethical (at least in the photo) had taken place. Jones was humiliated and never came within 10 points of Davis. COPS had previously been aligned with Davis.

4. AGREED. Some reasons below
Sorry, I have cut'n'pasted these from my other posts. I hate doing that sort of thing, but as soon as i watched the video I smelt a big filthy rat. Obama supporters need to wash their hands of this and LET IT SINK like the bullshit that it is.

It's a SCAM.

Here's the cut'n'paste...
Reasons why it is stupid:

1) It's not very clear whether he said that or not. I'm a film/video professional and I spend whole days analysing footage for a living. If I was was trying to portray this scene in a film, I'd go and shoot it again because it is not convincing.

2) Even if he said 'shitty' or 'white niggers' or what have you, it's not at all clear who or what he is talking about.

3) It's 1992. Why should I give a fuck?

4) Kantor isn't at the center of Clinton's campaign. Few people besides political junkies would even care who he is.

5) the backlash from accusations of doctored editing or whatever is likely to be a bigger problem than the original material. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it was a false flag operation.

6) Who are all these previously silent posters claiming to represent or be supporters of the Obama campaign? See #5.

Seriously - just pull your head out of your ass already and forget about it. This is such a reach that it is not worth the bandwidth.

10. The more important question....
Why is the Hillary campaign using Rovian dirty tricks against Obama? If it wasn't them, then it's the GOP trying to help Hillary. Why?

11. I don't know if it's Rove OR if it's against Obama...
Given the dissent that its causing, I think both campaigns are harmed by it. And I'm sure that Karl Rove isn't the only GOP operative who know how to doctor an audio track.

21. No. It was meant to hurt THE DEMOCRATS
Edited on Fri May-02-08 02:01 PM by RainDog
the republicans know at this point that Obama has the nomination. I'll try to find a link to yesterday's excellent post on this subject. Their goal, now, is to sow animosity among democrats. they want to suppress your vote. they want to discourage you from supporting the democratic nominee.

over the past three days, 3 important super delegates have come out in favor of Obama. His campaign would have NO REASON to pull such a stunt. It hurts Obama b/c he doesn't need this sort of bullshit to win. In the meantime, here's the reason why Obama has already won.

Currently Obama is credited with 1737 delegates (pledged and super) and Clinton is credited with 1598 delegates. Of the 795 Super Delegates only 272 haven't indicated for whom they intend to vote.

As such, assuming the remaining pledged delegates break 50/50 -- which given our system of proportional allocation is nearly certain to be at least roughly accurate -- then Clinton would need to win 206 of the remaining 272 Super Delegates to win. In other words, she would need to convince 75.7% of the remaining undecided Super Delegates. This would require her to gain more than 3 of the undecided for every one that Obama picks up. This is essentially impossible and this is why the race is really over. The only think Hillary Clinton can do at this point is continue to damage Obama by (1) attacking his qualifications to serve ("he's not ready" "he's not fit to be Comander and Chief"), (2) providing opposition research to the Republicans (see today's article in HuffPost), (3) making Obama waste campaign cash fighting Clinton instead of McCain, and (4) spliting the Dem and dragging the race out where her followers won't be willing to vote for Obama.

Here is the post that, presciently, noted just such tactics as those we see today-

25. History of Rovian tactics like this

2000: A "debate prep tape" of George Bush mysteriously ends up at Gore headquarters in an attempt to tar Gore for "theft". Gore doesn't bite, turns it over to authorities, who then find out that it was a low-level Bush staffer that sent it.

2004: The fact National Guard letters are sent to Dan Rather.... who buys it hook line and sinker. the MSM portray this as a dirty trick by Kerry supporters.

2008: A doctored video with Mickey Kantor saying bad stuff about Indianans ends up on Youtube. It is obviously doctored, and Hillary supporter - with no proof whatsoever - begin blaming the Obama people for a dirty trick.

This is Hillary following the Rove playbook.

This is a smear attempt on Obama, not Clinton.... because the MSM will spend all weekend reporting on the fact that the video was doctored and hinting that it was an Obama dirty trick.

Don't buy the Rovian bullshit, people.
