I'm hoping someone else heard Chris Matthews say....
Edited on Fri May-02-08 08:37 AM by TwoSparkles
...this.

Yesterday, during the afternoon--Matthews had pundits discussing the Democratic
Primary.

Matthews asked all of them about Hillary's chances and who was going to win. All
of the commentators agreed that Obama had it in the bag.

Matthews then said, "Ok, all of you pretty much think Obama has it. Yeah, that's
probably true. But if you listen to the media it's neck and neck, but we have to do that."

DID ANYONE ELSE HEAR THIS??????

I Tivo'd this and listened to it three times. That's what he said, "...we have to," meaning
that the media is obligated to keep the illusion of a neck-and-neck race?

I'm looking for the clip, but can't find it. The transcripts aren't up to yesterday's show
yet.

I think this is very significant. I think the talking heads are getting exhausted from this process,
and consequently--the truth slips out when that happens.

1. Of course they have to.
They have to keep their ratings up. And you're watching, aren't you?

16. Oh good...so I wasn't hallucinating!
You're right, it is bullshit.

I'm wondering....what in the hell did Matthews mean?

"We have to." Who is making them keep up the illusion of a horse race?

Is it their bosses? Is it the Clintons?

That one sentence is SO significant! He's admitting right there, that they
are manufacturing and selling a reality to the American people that does not
exist!!

They know Hillary can't win, but, according to Matthews--they are forced to
pontificate as if she can.

What a load of crap.

Anyone who owns a calculator and does the math--understands that she can't win.

All of this other stuff is just verbal chattel.

24. Maybe moveon or Daily Kos can get this
and put it up on You Tube. I am so sick of this shit. Clinton has as much chance of becomming the nominee as I do. And the media feeds into this. They do it for ratings, $$$, etc. I heard Jerry Springer, of all freakin' people, once state that the media should not be privately owned. They should be a public service. Jerry Springer, who btw supports Clinton, for Pete's sake knows this!!! AGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh!!!!!!:bounce:

18. Thank you!
I did my best to paraphrase what Matthews said, but it would be helpful
to have the exact words!

I hit 'rewind' and listened a few times--but I didn't record the show.

30. Chris said that he could tell that all three pundits thought
Obama has won it. Then one pundit said that she thought people were listening to Hillary's psychological argument. Then Matthews said yeah you are probably right. Then he says the media keeps playing this as even Steven. Then he said that maybe they have to. That is where my recording ended.

23. I think the talking heads---like all of us--
Edited on Fri May-02-08 08:55 AM by TwoSparkles
...are getting really tired of this drawn-out process.

It's especially exhausting when you know that she can't win.

Propping up an outrageous facade--for several hours a day--can
be taxing. Every once in a while the dam springs a leak--because
it takes so much emotional energy to perpetuate utter nonsense.

And now, according to Matthews--the media is propping up the
notion of a horse race--because they've been giving marching
orders to do so.

"We have to."

7. The media makes more money if it's still a horse race
Why buy a lot of time hammering each other if it's not 'neck and neck'

Bill Clinton has threatened to cut off access to media that offends him or won't play his way. Stands to reason he might strike a deal to keep his horse in the race if they keep pretending she has a chance. HRC needs to keep running in hopes of re-couping $$ she lent her campaign. Media makes more $ the longer this farce goes on.

Follow the $$ <---always sound advice in American politics ;)

14. Thats two things...
in as many days. Yesterday during MSNBC's interview with Kerry, right at the end when Kerry had pretty much taken the anchor woman to task on the pastor-gate thing, she said something right at the end that caught my ear. I can only paraphrase. It was something to the effect, "I knew he wouldn't like that question"? Almost as if were scripted and she felt a tad uncomfortable even asking it.

It's on Youtube, somewhere.

Do my ears decieve me or did anyone else catch it?

26. The media should call Bill Clinton's bluff....
He's threatening to cut off access to media that doesn't play it his way. However,
his wife needs the media. That's an empty threat, because if she burns her media
bridges, she doesn't get coverage.

I noticed that Clinton didn't do the Matthews "College Tour." Obama and McCain did.

That only hurt Clinton. It sure as hell didn't hurt Matthews.

Who cares if she stomps her feet and turns down thousands of dollars in free media
coverage.

Man, the arrogance in Clintonworld is unparalleled.

they do have to make it a horserace - I liked when he mentioned recently how much Hannity's and O'Reilly's ratings would go back up with the Clinton's in the White House.

I think the first time it came out was during their PA results coverage. For about 20 seconds or so he basically called bullshit on his own coverage and his network's coverage of this stupid 'race' that has been over now since March.

25. I have heard various "serious" pundits say this every now and then
"We have to keep it exciting." And of course, Stewart and Colbert have been milking this as a joke for some time now.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, like the MSM asking, "Why do we keep reporting on this stuff? Why is it getting do much coverage?" Um, because you're covering right now.

Really, this election insanity in the media is a manifestation of a sick society. And yet, because so much is at stake, we can't NOT pay attention.

with the words coming right out of his mouth, along with some related choice commentary calling him out on all his racist and sexist shit against BOTH our Dems. If we're lucky, next thing you know, he'll be bragging his bottom line: "We're rigging it for John McCain. We HAVE to do that." Like all of us here don't already know.
