Edwards coming home Saturday
Thousands expected at NCSU rally

By JOHN FRANK AND BARBARA BARRETT, Staff Writers

Thousands of people from across the state are expected to gather Saturday afternoon as John Kerry and John Edwards bring the spectacle and fanfare of a national political rally to Raleigh.

The event is billed as a "welcome home" for Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth. The headliners are scheduled to appear at 4:30 p.m. on the campus of N.C. State University, Edwards' alma mater.

Organizers estimate 5,000 to 10,000 Democrats and others will attend the event in the Court of North Carolina, a quadrangle near the Bell Tower just off Hillsborough Street. They suggest getting passes early.

"It's the first event of its kind in North Carolina," said Schorr Johnson, spokesman for the N.C. Democratic Party.

The rally is the first joint appearance in North Carolina since Kerry selected Edwards on Tuesday as his vice presidential running mate. It is the final stop of a four-day sweep through five key states that began in Ohio and highlights North Carolina's prominence as a newly targeted state for Democrats' White House hopes.

3. I believe Edwards and his family will attend a church service with the
Kerry's tomorrow in NC. The photo op hit parade is just starting. I love seeing the families together, with children young and old.

4. Local channels here are showing them getting off the plane
and coverage of the crowd at the rally site.

A couple of channels locally are suspending regular programming to show it all!

5. Local News is saying this is Kerry's largest crowd EVER probably.
They are saying 15,000 to 20,000 people.

On a 100 degree day, outside in the blazing sun, no less.

Go Heels!

(Coach K of Duke was big Elizabeth Dole supporter, BTW.)

K is smarmy, looks like a rat. Don't particulary like UNC but Dean has always been top notch.

12. HUGE success today in Raleigh!!!!
I was one of the 25,000 at today's event, and let me assure all of you, it was a massive, massive success. Please see my other recent posts in this forum for details and commentary.

200 volunteers hoped for, 600 showed up; 5-10,000 attendees expected, 25,000 showed up (in 100-degree heat!!) The candidates and their wives did not disappoint. The crowd was loud, diverse, and enthusiastic. It was a truly great experience.

CONGRATULATIONS, NORTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATS!!! We really showed up and represented ourselves brilliantly today. I simply couldn't be prouder than I am right now!
