One standard for whites, with a much tougher standard for blacks.

White media want black people to be genteel, to speak in soft tones while smiling big, to avoid anything that suggests whites have failed to deliver on equality. 33. There's more to it than that.

Thanks to the innocuously named "Southern Strategy" of the Republicans, to which they owe all of their Presidential victories since 1968, African-Americans have been ever more closely targeted for disenfranchisement in elections.

The community itself has responded to the pressure, and can now be counted upon to vote in favor of Democrats 9 to 1, which makes them an even larger target in the eyes of the GOP. All of the "voting integrity" initiatives of Republican controlled state legislatures are designed, at least in part, to box out black voters.

Just watch this summer how the mainstream media will parse those figures. They'll haul out the 90% figure again and again like it's something new and completely unseen. Not one news source will mention that Al Gore, John Kerry and Bill Clinton all drew similar percentages. Newt Gingrich has probably already distributed one of his vocabulary lists, and I'll bet anything that "uppity" is on that list.

It's going to be a rough year for all African-Americans and for everyone who empathises their plight. Few outside of this place will dare say that it's those racist sonsabitches in the Republican Party who are deliberately pushing the issue.

But the prize is within our grasp. Let us never avert our eyes from it.
